David has a V shaped memory foan pillow which he loves. Been thinking about a mattress as well.

Anyone have one and do you think they are any good?

His hip is particularly painful and I thought this might help.

I have a memory foam topper, one of the best thing I have ever purchased. But I'm not bragging here I went for a better quality one like a Dormeo, they tend to be sort of denser and hold together better, but they are more expensive. I think you can get them in different depths too go for a 2/3 inch depth. I'm on my 2nd Dormeo one. Well worth the money with the comfort and support it gives. I have a cheaper version on my caravan bed, it's ok for as much as I use it but always glad to get back to my proper bed. I know someone who had the mattress and they couldn't settle on it, but love their mattress topper.

That's interesting that the topper comes out better than the mattress. Thanks. Whatever we get i have to share it too!

I would strongly recommend one. I brought a mid-price mattress one (£120). It made such a difference. Only problem is it seems to be going now and I'm waking with pain a lot. Perhaps worth going for a higher price on. Definitively try before you buy as I was surprised with the density/ firmness I chose. My parents have a topper in their spare room, and I have to agree it is very good.

I went for a topper, well two ((on for the spare bed.) both are different, one is deeper than the other. I wouldn't swap my toppers for anything. Both are so good.xx Oh and less expensive than a new mattress. x

Would you recommend the thicker ones are better then?

Hello Bob here

Morning Pat

We have hhad memory foam mattresses now for at least eight years and find them fantastic. When we purchased the bungalow as a holiday home we got our second one a Silent Night.

The older one is an HSL one and that is the best on.

Both beds are adjustable the HSL has massage and are fantastic, you feel that you are lying on clouds and in turn help you to sleep, would totally recommend them

We hav e a memory foam mattress it the caravan and a topper we take on holiday with us. The topper is good as it makes suspect beds comfortable.

For price look at the HSL site they are are reasonable, the Silent night is not as good, and if you have a choice go there.

David and you will love it

All the best

Thanks Bob. Jury is now 1 for mattress and 2 for topper! Probably with the cost it may have to be a thick topper.

But my next question - will the fitted sheets fit?!! Life is so difficult!

Shop at Bathgate which could be worth investigating.

Morning Pat

HSL has a shop in Bathgate, been before.

No problems with sheets, both topper and mattress all fit ok.

All the best

Hi Pat,

I bought a Tempur mattress 7 years ago as my back was needing more support. To keep the cost down I had a single with a new single bed, a slatted one which they recommended, as I had been disturbing Brian with my unrest. it was brilliant for several years but then began to lose the support (and I was under 10 stone then - now under 9 after all the pain I was in for 9 months until my injection) Am now on an ordinary sprung mattress which is not too bad, might think about a topper after all the above replies.

Love, Chrissy

Does anyone think a topper would work on top of a Memory Foam Mattress that is starting to give in? Or should I scrap the whole Mattress?

Thanks

deb25426 in reply to Monkeybonesloz

It maybe worth trying the topper? Then if no good just by a normal mattress??

Have one on the spare bed... the all foam type, I have slept on it quote a few times (on funny sleep/some bad pain nights!), and I like it and I don't like it at the same time!

Slept on one or two others at friend's homes, and to be honest I much prefer the one I have, yet it was FAR cheaper (only spare room after all!).

Support is fine, [I have a dislocated/arthritic hip (and more!) too], that is very good in fact but turning over is made more difficult though... you feel a little as if on quicksand in some ways, which I can find a little problematic, it is also VERY, very hot, that's the big drawback with foam of any type, despite some claims by retailers :-(

I have changed my mattress a few times in recent 15 years or so, I totally HAMMER beds, (although I am lighter now) weight and sleep issues do that, and I like decent quality support (not hard though!) so it gets the boot when it starts to deteriorate, and that is probably long before most people would do that - it is one of VERY few areas in life I tend to be a bit more extravagant with!

Didn't go for foam option for my main bed though... still think it has to be conventional pocket sprung (as high a number as possible, certainly at least 1000+ note: they give the measurement as the number in the Kingsize, even if it is a single!) every time.

I did strongly consider a pocket sprung/foam hybrid type though, as that is potentially best of both worlds but ended up with the more conventional type in the end, with the problem of heat being on my mind.

One thing for sure, beds are a total minefield as far as purchases go - there are some total rip-offs going on, the big name bed and furniture companies are number one on the list of all retailers to be totally avoided... even the best will quote prices that are largely works of fiction - they double them up so they can reduce them to the standard price later, (that's 100% universal!) Yes, try products out there by all means, but then buy them online - FAR far cheaper, (although they usually have different names of models, that only they sell to throw you off proper price comparison so you just need to go by the same specification bed/mattress from the same manufacturer!) and they certainly give no worse service, (next day delivery is easy for example) the track record of some companies I could mention is nothing short of appalling :-(

As for HSL?... well I would laugh, but the prices are simply not funny... it is easy to HALF their prices for the same quality adjustable bed - well, that is for the prices you can actually get out of them without the sales patter and the "extras"! :-(

Oh heck. Now I am more confused!

David does get very hot in bed and i always use pure cotton to help. Forgot that foam can make it worse.

Maybe a new mattress instead then?

We always do plenty of 'homework' before buying anything so all this is really helpful.

You can ask 20 people and get as many diferent answers.

Yep, to confuse you even more (sorry, but I think this is worth recommending) I just gave up with mattresses I was waking so much in the night. I bought a camping air mattress, the aerobed, £66 from Amazon. It rolls into it's own tube, which is also the pump, when deflated. Tube fits neatly into a suitcase. SSooo comfy because you can adjust it exactly to the tension you want. I even took it on hols and it went on top of hotel beds too, much to the bemusement of the staff I could not even sleep on their beds, my hips are so sensitive. After 3 months hips now improving!

We got a memory foam mattress topper from IKEA. It's great. The original mattress takes all the body weight and the memory foam makes it comfortable. It works much be same way as the old sheepskin sheets in hospital by spreading the body contact area and moulding around it.

It really is soothing for achy joints or if you spend a lot of time in bed, you are less stiff when you get up.

Hot in bed? when my knees are firing heat I lie on my front up the bed a bit. This heats up the mattress, when I turn over, I have a lovely hot spot to sooth my lower back. This heats up my back and eventually it all relaxes, lovely!

I never got on with memory foam - I felt like I was suffocating but the best thing I bought was a latex mattress which I love! It's natural material. You don't overheat and for those who need it, it's naturally anti-allergic. I think you can get toppers in latex too! :)

Not heard of Latex Mattress before. My Husband gets very hot as well. Are they generally in stores to try out? Just looked them up and found they do do toppers - has anyone tried just a Latex topper.

I have a dynamic mattress that is basically an air bed that constantly changes the pressure underneath you, I think they are also known as ripple mattress's, I tried one in hospital as they are used to prevent pressure sores for bed ridden patients and had the first comfortable night sleep in years. When I got home I asked my OT about trialing one so that I could get some sleep and she provided me with a mattress and a bed. I find it noisy if the pump slips as it causes the bed to vibrate and it can be hot as it has a plastic cover, I put a mattress protector on the top to help that however the pain relief and the fact I can get 4 hours uninterrupted sleep is bliss.

I have thought about a memory foam mattress and so am reading this post with great interest as sleeping alone can be tiresome I miss my cuddles.

Well this has been fun! We've rolled and rocked our way through every sort of mattress and topper! The only type not mentioned is a water bed!!

Thanks for all advice and hope we've all gained knowledge. Trouble with the air bed types is David is a lot heavier and I bounce like a cork at sea.

We will probably need a new mattress but going to get a decent topper and see if the mattress will do.

My mattress is part memory foam and part sprung - I tried out a couple of mattresses that were all memory foam but felt like I sank in and couldn't move! I spent a couple of hours in my local bed shop, luckily they were happy to leave me to try each bed for a while until I found the one I was happy with. In the end I chose an electrically adjustable bed base and combo mattress and being registered disabled, I didn't have to pay the VAT.

We started with two 3inch toppers, we have single beds, and they were good, then about 3 months ago I bought my wife a tempur at a cost of £1,300, as her back and hips are quite bad and she is happy with this. As I get some hip pain I decided to use her old topper on top of mine, at first it seemed ok but then I began to ache during the night, I realised two toppers do not work you sink in so much that turning in the night is more difficult, so I put the extra topper under the mattress rather than throw it and this is much better. Sounds like you've got every angle covered!

A tempur is beyond our modest means but maybe I could persuade social works to fund one> Always worth asking.

However as we have a double bed I guess I may have some say! But if it helps David that's fine by me. Maybe a really solid mattress would help him> He has a very poorly back and now hip too.

Thanks anyway. i won;t ask where you get your stage name from but I get called 'fag ash Lil'!

Also if you use a hot blanket to help with pain from time to time, the memory foam breaks down a lot quicker and therefore I would buy a memory form matters again.

Hello Pat

Bob here

We have two adjustable beds, one with massage.

HSL is the one with massage

Silentnight is adjustable Both models are on a pine frame.

The HSL has a fully remote control, also a wired control so you can please yourself.

The Silentnight has a wired control, granted the HSL is more expensive although the depth of memory foam is much deeper than Silentnight

Silentnight does not have massage

When we moved up to Berwick we purchased the Silentnight, although we found it not to be as good as the HSL

When we moved here completely we moved the HSL into our bedroom and moved the Silentnight to No1 .as this was the better bed.

When you buy a beech frame you can have a different mattress for each of you as you purchase two single beds that are attached and secured together.

If you want you can go the sky is the limit so you make your choice that affords your need and purse.

Silentnight does not return the VAT, HSL will give you the oppertunity not to pay the VAT because of disability .so that becomes a discount on a more expensive bed, so it is your choice

Memory foam toppers are the same, although the better ones are more expensive, all to do with the thickness of the foam

Hazel and I purchased the cheaper one, Silentnight, we are now back to our HSL

Hop this helps
