Great news today that research is helping to identify genetic characteristics which increase breast cancer risk, particularly for those with BRCA mutations:

What they don't tell you is you have to have a certain number of "points" to qualify for the genetic testing. I just qualified as my Mum had a pre cancerours breast lump removed, her brother has prostate cancer and my oc. My sister didn't qualify, and could only get the genetic testing if I had the brca mutations. It's great news, but I reckon NICE will not allow it....me being a total cynic here!

I agree with Chris on this one, I am a prime example of this.

The only relative that I am aware of with OV cancer was my mum and no breast cancer in the family at all. I did not have enough number of points to meet the tested criteria.

Genetic testing was suggested ONLY after my own diagnosis with OV cancer and that of my brothers colon cancer diagnosis.

My brother didn`t have the brac mutatation, but I do , then my two daughters were tested and they also both have the brac one gene mutation.

What I wasn`t aware, this gives us an 85% risk of breast cancer, while our OV cancer risk run at 50%.

So, we have an 85% risk of breast cancer unyet not one family member as far as we are aware had the disease, food for thought, I think!
