Hi! I need help with alternative treatments for my mother who has done chemotherapy and radiation already.

She was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer in June of 2008 and underwent a hysterectomy and a round of chemotherapy after that. She went into remission for a bit and relapsed, and this cycle continued another time until she had to have another operation to remove a tumor near her cervix. She then had a round of radiation (included internal radiation) and because of that, her intestinal wall collapsed. Her CA has gone up to 1,300 now and we have been recommended chemotherapy in tablet form but are wary because it will disrupt her stomach. She is now functioning with a stoma bag and we could use any help we could get!

Thank you xx

Sorry! Forgot to add, the chemotherapy treatments she took were carboplatin, paclitaxel, and doxil. She also took tamoxifen in tablet form.

Sorry your Mother's having such a difficult time. Look up the 'Budwig Protocol', "Anticancer; a new way of life" and The "Gerson Institute". I have personal experience of the first two, and swear by the Anticancer stuff as it answers diet, physical and mental health issues. The Gerson protocol was the one used by Michael Gearin-Tosh who wrote "Living Proof' about his journey through treating himself for a rare bone cancer.

I hope you and she find the route that does it for you.

Thank you very much, Isadora. I'm looking at the Budwing Protocol right now, did it really help you? My mum is already partaking in "Anticancer: a new way of life". I will check out the Gerson protocol, thank you very much :) xx

I followed Budwig whilst I was having chemo, and then relaxed it but kept up the yoghurt or cottage cheese and flax oil several times a week for about a year. I don't (of course) know if it helped, but I felt it did.

Hi shishu95,

It sounds like a really difficult time for your family.

Please be VERY CAREFUL if you consider Gerson. We have very anxious feelings about it, and some members have had very poor experiences trying it.

Regarding chemotherapy treatment and its side effects, the important thing to remember is that there is a scale of likelyhood of side effects (For example with Taxol, you are pretty much 100% going to loose your hair) Are you sure that she will certainly experience stomach problems? If so, how can they be managed? Its really important to get these answers from your Mums team.

There are other types of chemo and treatment around, but I suppose they believe this is the better one for her at the moment - Its worth asking why, and if she disagrees what other treatment they would consider.

Please do call the helpline if you want to discuss this with the Ovacome nurses.

I hope they manage to find something which will hold the disease and at the same time be OK for your Mum.

Louise

Hi Louise! Thank you, it is, but we're getting through it. What have been the complications of Gerson? We'll be wary of it.

We were told by the gastro doctor that this certain type of chemotherapy does not react well with her stomach, and since she has already had so many problems with her stomach, the doctor isn't sure this is a good option, and neither does our family. She has a hard time eating and frequently vomits after meals, which makes her immunity levels low, so we don't want to pursue that line of medication.

I think I will, thank you very much Louise you were a great help. xx

I looked on the Bristol Cancer (now called the Penny Brohn Centre) when I was first diagnosed. They pioneered complementary therapies and support for patients and produce lots of info on nutrition, supplements and therapies. They also produce excellent CDs with meditations, visualisations and relaxation sessions on them. They also do residential sessions and quite a few of the women on this sitehave benefited from them. It may be worth a look, as it's not an all-or-nothing approach, more a way of supporting your Mum as she goes through her treatment.

All the best

I'm sorry your Mother is having such a difficult time of it. As Isadora and others have suggested, introduce her to the Budwig protocol. There is a wonderful Yahoo discussion group you can join to learn all about it ... the site is ... health.groups.yahoo.com/gro...

The diet is pretty strict, but it is (after all), "FOOD" and it provides great comfort to believe that food may help not only curatively (for many) but as a preventative measure for the rest of one's life. Eating well, reducing stress, plenty of exercise, getting a therapeutic dose of sunshine every day can the catalyst for change. One must be committed to that change, because if the conditions (in one's body) haven't changed when the cancer occurred in the first place, what is to stop it coming back?

I've been following the Budwig protocol, albeit loosely, for 12 years. Mind you, in spite of other temptations, I do have the Budwig breakfast every day, 'no-matter-what!' And, I have eliminated all bad fats and sugar. I eat lots of fruit and veggies and eat unprocessed foods.

I started 'Budwig' a few months after finishing chemo in November 1999. At that point I was 'disease free' after finishing treatment with a Ca 125 of 15, (down from 9,800 at diagnosis ... Stage 1V).

With your Mum still fighting OvCa, she may not have the same results as I did, ... we are all different, spiritually, mentally and physically and so we respond to treatments of any kind (including chemo) - differently. She may perhaps consider trying chemo along with the Budwig protocol? Whatever it is she decides to do, the enthusiasm has to come from her .... so if you do the research for your Mum and show her what you have found, (whether it be the Gerson or Budwig protocol or something else) ... let her decide what seems to be right for her at this juncture of her life.

Another very good source of information is the Bill Henderson site. Bill Henderson's first wife died of Ovarian cancer and so he has devoted his life to seeking out many alternative cures and has written a very good book all about it. He also strongly endorses the Budwig protocol.

His website is: beating-cancer-gently.com/

I hope this informations helps you and your Mum.

Take care ... Sandy.

Whatever your mum decides to do I think it wise to follow the advice of her oncologist,

who has probably been doing this for a long time. best wishes Gwyneth

Hi everyone, sorry for not replying for such a long time.. I appreciate everyone's help but my mother pursued a line of homeopathic medicine from Bali and she passed away on Sept. 27th.

I really miss her and don't really know what to do now. Thank you for all the love and support you've shown me. xx
