Does anyone know if I'll be able to get travel insurance for a flight while on 3 weekly maintenance chemo of Avastin?

This is a difficult one. Unfortunately Avastin can increase the risk of blood clots ( and so can flying) so do make sure that you discuss air travel with your oncologist first. If you would like to discuss this further do give us a ring on 08453710554 Mon- Fri 10-5

Best Wishes

Ruth

Take care Liz. We don't want you falling I'll on the plane. I've travelled extensively during chemo - though I didn't have Avastin. I have travel insurance via my bank account which covers me for theft, accident, etc. but I would expect to pay for my flight home if it were a cancer-related issue. This means I can continue with my existing insurance. It's ridulous that insurers won't cover us at all with our degenerative disease. Having cancer doesn't exactly make you more prone to accident or loss. Xx let us know how you get on. Xx Annie

Hi Liz

I went on holiday to tunisia after chemo but when still having the avastin for a trial 3 years ago, I got my insurance through MIA, no problems.

have a good time away!

Hello Liz,

I had finished my 6 x3 weekly chemo sessions when my oncologist told me to have a good holiday.

I was not able to get holiday insurance within the EU because I had not been given the all clear. But was able to get insurance outside the EU such as Turkey.

We investigated and discovered the insurance would cost more than the holiday and this was with the one and only insurance company who would even entertain cover.

I was told that I would be able to get insurance cover through mac millon however it would be costly.

I do hear of many people who simply don`t declare the cancer.

This is so not advisable because if for example you get ill with a tummy bug or ear infection or something else unrelated to the cancer, and the insurance companu get wind of you not declarring other underlining illnesses then they may refuse to cover you for the tummy bug or infection or other.

My daughter works for Tomsons travel and she deals with holiday insurance every day of her working life, she said always always declare everything and never forget to read the small print.

It really does depend if you are prepared to take the risk.

It is also reasurring that other ladies on here have managed to get insurance no problem - it is so worth doing your homework.

Take care and travel well

Hugs from Tina xx

Thanks Tina - I hope I don't find myself in the same position as I've already booked the flight!!!! Because my oncologist said I could go ahead I got so excited that I organised flights first and then thought about insurance. I will declare the full facts as I don't want to get caught out. We're only flying to Dublin so if I hit major obstacles I'll have to go on the ferry!!!
