Metformin to delay/prevent recurrence

Hi all. I'm new here so apologies if this has already been discussed before. There's alot of information out there showing better outcomes for Metformin (type 2 diabetes drug) users in preventing recurrence. I know it's been a popular thread in some of the American forums and there are ongoing clinical trials. Are there any non diabetics out there taking Metformin due to its anti cancer properties? Or has anyone successfully been able to obtain a NHS prescription without being diabetic? I think I already know the answer to that one!

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Hi Sue

The only answer I can give you is that I was on Metformin for type 2 diabetes for several years and still got OC, I've also had a recurrence. I don't know of anyone who has been put on it who doesn't have diabetes. I've been taken off it now because my diabetes is well controlled and probably amongst other side effects Metformin causes diahorrea - something I don't want as I have an ileostomy and a stoma!!

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Thank you for all your replies. Jenny here is a link for more information inquisitr.com/213941/metfor...

However if you just google metformin and cancer, you will see a lot of information already out there.

Just for interest here is another good link for suggestions on how to delay/prevent recurrence. When you're on the cancer journey, you have to consider all options/supplements I guess. Maybe it will help, maybe it won't but it gives you back a little control and the feeling that you're "trying" to do something to help yourself. Good Luck to all!

Hi

as i said last time discussed I've been on Metformin for 8 years, got OC 3 yrs ago, still taking Metformin and am just now going into 3 rd relapse ...... It doesn't seem to have done much good for me but having said that could it have been worse without Metformin?..

I had not heard of this and it has not been suggested tome! I have steroid induced type 2 diabetes and have it under control with dit and exercise. The other comments make me hesitant about askig about metaformin as I have a colostomy and it is active enough without diarrhoea! Changing the bag every couple of hours through the night and occasionally waking up in a mess is enough for me!

Hello. Thank you for all your comments, much appreciated. Metformin I agree wouldn't be for everyone as treatments plans should be dependent on the individual. Even if the results of the clinical tests are shown to be positive in the years to come it will be a long while I think before "NICE" approves it for use in the UK.

It seems Metformin is more readily prescribed in America for individuals wanting to use it for anticancer purposes.

Best Wishes
