Hello. My Mum is on her second round of chemo for Stage 3 OC - she is starting Avastin alongside Chemo next week. Has anyone had any experiences of Avastin?

Hi Kate! From what I have heard it is a good thing to have approved. However, I'm no expert! Try typing Avastin into the search box at the top of this page and see what others have said on here. Or try ringing the helpline team on 0845 371 0554

All the best to your Mum

Love Wendy xx

Hi Kate

I was on the ICON 7 trial, which gave me avastin with carbo/taxol for my first line treatment, I had no problems with it until 10 doses in (they were to give me 16) when I had some neuro side effects which apparantly the makers hadnt heard of before or since, hence they were not at all common.they caused no lasting problems, and am so thankful I got it as it helped to keep me clear for nearly 3 years.

I wish your mum well, and good luck- if theres anything else I can help with let me know

Thanks Sue - what stage were you at when you had this? Mum has been told she cannot be cured its just for control?

Hi Kate

I was stage 3a on diagnosis. The avastin wont cure it, it gives us longer between treatment. The longer the better I say!

Hi Kate

I can only say that my experience so far has been good. I was diagnosed back in February with, as the they put it "Mass lesions which were intensely avid" and was diagnosed at stage 3. I have just met today with my oncologist getting the results of my mid term scans , which shows a dramatic very substantial response with the residual disease now very difficult to define. I still have 4 chemos (Carbo/Taxol) to go along with Avastan, but so far so good. As yet I haven't had any major side effects from the Avastan apart from some small nose bleeds. I do have pain in my legs for a few days after the chemo, but that's being put down to side effects of the Taxol.

Hope this helps. x

Really helpful - thank you. Mum has a large tumor on her ovary and then spread right across the abdomen and some to the bowel. She had one full round of chemo last year and it reduced the tumour and spread but 3 months later it was back to full size and spread again hence the next round on chemo...pleased that we have got Avastin which we have fought for! Just always looking for new ideas!
