After surgery

Still waitin g to see if I am actually going to be fit to have surgery. The surgeon told me that he would be removing my omentum with everything else. Ive seen a few very old posts where people have said they can feel their intestines moving about once that has been removed, is this true ? Sounds horrible. Also is everything going to "droop" !

B een preparing myself by ordering a spare freezer for ready meals for afterwards.Just had to haul it round my conservatory and rearrange the furniture, good job its before the op !

Hello Rosebine

Well yes I think you can feel more without an omentum but not to a gross extent! Try not to worry..it’s very do-able and afterwards you will know that they’ve got out as much as they can. I hope you stay well and get your op very soon xx

Can't say I noticed the missing omentum made any difference. I think I was slightly hysterical with the shock of the diagnosis/the op cos I kept thinking that they'd taken so many things out there must be a lot of space in there....I was thinking about my kidneys having a chat and saying 'Spooky in here innit' 'Yeah, and there's an echo....'

Yep, definitely hysterical 🤣

Well I had mine removed 2.5 years ago along with spleen, part of large bowel, gall bladder and part of diaphragm and full hysterectomy and I don't feel anything different. I've never heard of anyone feeling their intestines moving around. I know you must be nervous but you will be fine. Xxxxx

Hi

I had omentum and all other bits removed, and have never felt droopy!

It really will be ok and preparing for it

now will be reassuring for you. Everyone on this site will be here for you.

I had my omentum, female parts and 2 resections on my intestines. I didn’t notice anything different. The omentum is removed and it is a layer that isn’t that deep. My nurse was telling me about it, because I thought I would end up with a slim tummy. Not so, it doesn’t really affect the inches on our abdomen. I thought it would make a difference, but no such luck. ☹️ Hope you do well, Donna

My surgeon did not mention this before surgery, but a post-op CT scan of my abdominal area noted that I had numerous clips in my body. I would have to reread the post-op report, but I believe it’s like 20-30 clips. I believe these are what holds remaining organs and internal parts in place. I believe these permanent clips are metal, perhaps titanium. Good luck with your surgery. Sashay

Oh, I never knew that about the clips. It was not mentioned to me at all. Are you in the UK? I was told that internal stitches take 4 to 6 months to dissolve and I may up with a bits of plastic in me from that.

I’m in the US and the radiologist report mentioned numerous clips. Maybe some doctors use internal stitches or a combination of both.

[Edited by moderator] I didn't even know I had an omentum so maybe that's why I didn't miss it, my abdomen feels the same as it did before no more droop I've just got a stripe down the middle of it so next time I see a zebra I can say I know how it feels. I'll let you into a secret I was hoping for a flat stomach afterwards so you can imagine the disappointment! 😂😂 You did the right thing by moving things around before the op.. Be careful afterwards because the trouble is everything will look okay and you'll feel okay but your poor insides will need a bit longer. All the best Sue xx

PS I don't know anything about clips obviously each op. is tailored to the person.

Don't worry l had the same operation, and l dont feel things moving about . Ive got a bit of a belly which l didn't have before. When l first looked at my scar thought it looked like a zip. But it looks like a fine line over time. So please try notto worry its worth the benefits to your health.

Wish you good luck sending hugs for a speedy recovery. SheilaFxxx

Many times they remove all or part of omentum. You will wear a brace for 3 or 4 months and to this day i wear control pants. No lifting more than a few lbs and take care as your muscle tissue has been compromised. After 2 months your doc can clear you to exercise in a pool say at a phys therapists. And walk. Good luck and hugs from france

A brace? I never had a brace.....

Ruebacelle profile image
Ruebacelle in reply to KH59

It protects abdomen while healing keeps hernias from forming

KH59 profile image
KH59 in reply to Ruebacelle

Oh I see. I was never offered a brace. I guess it all depends on the individual circumstances of the operation.

Ruebacelle profile image
Ruebacelle in reply to KH59

If they cut muscle you need a brace while tissue heals. After your tissue will remain fragile so they recommend control panties After the brace. Good luck

Okay, thank you. I had my operation last October so practically healed now. No muscle cut in my proceedure. :)

That's great. They opened me up sternum to pubis cutting straight through muscle tissue

Clips! That will be good if ever I go through a metal detector at an airport !And I was counting on getting a flatter tum !

I’ve not heard that before! I didn’t notice any real difference other than my stomach was softer but that’s probably due to some sizeable uninvited visitors being evicted! I found it very doable and not even a fraction as bad as I’d imagined and read. Good luck x

I had my omentum removed in January 2018, and I haven't got 20-40 clips left in there, there's not even one in respect of the missing omentum, I've never heard this before, does anyone else have this? I do have some clips where they resected part of my bowel to keep the join together, but nothing to do with removal of the omentum.

I lost some weight in hospital over 9 days, but I did indeed notice there seemed to be little or no fat over my tummy area, my stomach was totally flat for the first time ever in my entire life, but I didn't really notice the missing omentum otherwise, although I developed a rather large incisional hernia which I still have, and that is what has allowed my intestines to move around, not particularly the loss of the omentum.

Love Lynn 6156' s comment above, but I think she's kind of hit on something - you do kind of think there'll be loads of empty space in there afterwards, as there would be if you removed some furniture from a room, but I don't think it works like that🤗

Its good you're preparing for when you return home so you can take things easier...

Good luck, Miriam

:-) Showing my age now, but it reminds me of the tony hancock sketch 'the blood donor' when he said a pint was nearly an armful and he wasnt walking round with an empty arm for anyone!

I had my operation done at the end of Oct 2020. Total abdominal hysterectomy (TAH) GIST tumour removed and a bowel resection. Hospital stay approx 2 weeks. I was particularly very worried about having my Omentum removed as I too had read stories about tummies going horribly baggy. After the op I could feel my upset intestines growling and moving about if I put my hand on my abdomen. with a little time it did all settle down and now I don't notice it. There are still certain foods that I cannot eat like garlic, onions and some raw veg ( & stir fry) which can upset my tummy. I lost quite a lot of weight after the op but my tummy is flatter now than it has ever been, even though I've gained the weight back on again. You still have muscles in your tummy, they don't take those away. I'm sure with some gentle exercise I could still improve the tone. The scar's appearance has also improved. So, don't add that to your worries or fears. Good luck with the operation.

I think that is good news. You will be surprised how quickly you get over the op, I will be hoping for some nice warm weather in April, so you can sit in the garden and recover.I hope you have found someone to look after your dog, while you are in hospital, and wondered if you know about the Cinnamon Trust, who are a charity who will come and take your dog for walks, once you are home. My friend used them when she became an invalid, and it meant that she did not have to give up her much loved pet.

The first several days after surgery I felt sensations very similar to feeling a baby move. It was really strange, as my youngest child was 18 and I no longer had a uterus! It only lasted for a week or two, then either it stopped or I got used to it. I didn't notice much change in how my stomach looked--I'm not a skinny person--but my waist came back after the tumors were removed. Best of luck with your surgery.--Lani

Rosebine, No and no. I feel no different and things are not rolling around. Complete debulking and omentum

A brace being mentioned, not heard of this, do you mean a sort of body wrap, like control pants only round the waist?

I think Im ready to go in ! Its costing me an arm and a leg what with having to buy a freezer for all my prepared meals (said freezer driving me made with loud popping noises, trying to speak to a human being at Argos to sort this, impossible) new nightie, loose waist trousers for home, new not grey knickers, a portable DVD player to take in (which I bet I dont use) various picking up thingys for the home. Loads of ready meals, stack of books. I think Im going to need someone to actually boot me in through the door though, I have a yellow streak running right up my back.

I'm sure you will be okay. Remember there will be lots of professional medical staff looking after you. Well done with getting the food sorted. (Shame about the fridge!) I slept most of the time during my stay in hospital. All the very best to you. You can do this!
