Hello all, I was supposed to start chemo yesterday, but a CT scan of lung shows two suspicions nodules. So my oncologist has ordered a needle biopsy of lung. I’m thinking let’s just assume that it is cancer metastasis from OC and move on with chemo. Can anyone share lung needle biopsy and how OC lung metastasis are addressed? Is the biopsy and recovery painful? Thank you so much.

I had two lung nodules, my chemo went ahead as planned, there was never any mention of biopsy's. I think if it were me, I would ring your oncologist and ask why they felt it necessary to cancel your chemo. Good luck. x
Thanks Lyn. There are risks with lung biopsy and I figure even if it is lung metastasis, I still need chemo. I really appreciate your response.

Hi. I have multiple lung modules which are not cancer. They were discovered at my diagnosis and a PET scan showed they were not cancer. They have been tracking them since and they remain unchanged. If yours are new and weren’t there previously then I guess that’s suspicious and I have the impression (from listening to You, Me and the Big C) that they can be treated by methods other than chemo though if you need chemo anyway it seems like they might respond to that. Ask more questions of your onc. Xx
Thanks, Delia. In three weeks, this was would be my third surgical procedure. I have convinced myself that I can get through chemo and I really want to get going on that. Thanks so much for responding. I will inquire about alternatives such as a PET scan.

Hello, they will need to prove that the nodules are cancer before giving chemo. I haven’t had lung biopsy but have had 6 lung drains of different types. I think you will find it ok... the drain is minimally painful as it enters the pleural space but I think they are much bigger than the biopsy needle from what I have heard. It’s done by ultrasound guide so that they get the right place.
My chemo ( carboplatin) is working to reduce my lung lesions which are mets from oc. Weirdly that and a bit on my liver are the places it came back. Hope all goes well for you xx
Thanks Lyndy. I was already scheduled for chemo for the OC. I figure malignant or benign lung nodules, I still need chemo for OC. Plus I have dealt with cough variant asthma for 35 years. I’m extremely fragrance sensitive. When the surgeon was putting in many port, I began to cough and they had to give me more sedation, which resulted in a longer stay in recovery room. I am going to ask if a PET scan will provide the needed info. We’ll see. Thanks for responding, Lyndy. I really appreciate it.

Hi Sashay, I'm kind of in the same boat as you but can't really help. I had dry pleurisy and still have for that matter. When they CT scanned my lung they found 3 nodules and I was told it may be the cancer but they were not sure. I had another scan on Tuesday and get the results
next Thursday. I had just finished 1st line chemo by days when this happened so would have hoped if there had been cancer in my lung the chemo wold have got it. Will find out next week, here's hoping for both of us. Sue xx
I sure hope we both have good news in our futures. I spoke with my oncologist’s nurse and explained my concerns about my cough variant asthma. I have coughing spells every day of my life and even began coughing with the general surgeon was putting in my port. That had to give me additional sedation. Anyway, I’m skipping the biopsy for now and begin chemo next Thursday. Thank you kindly for responding , Sue

Hi Sashay 2020. I had a CT of my lungs which found 2 nodules and a couple of lymph node enlargements. A pulmonologist performed an EBUS procedure in which a flexible tube was inserted in my mouth down my windpipe & into my lungs. This allowed for a biopsy. The biopsy showed that it was indeed cancer and the type of cancer. It match exactly my original breast cancer. It was hard to swallow b/c now I had metastatic BC. I was ok after the procedure. I then underwent a clinical trial. I hope this helps. Good luck.
My oncologist said that I would have had that procedure if the nodules were in the center of my lungs. Because one of the he nodules is in the peripheral area of my lung, they wanted to do a needle biopsy. Thanks for sharing your experience with me, Syl. I start chemo next week.

Hi Sashay,
I have innumerable lung nodules. I had a CT guided needle biopsy. They give you a local, it’s not painful just uncomfortable when the needle goes through the plura of the lung. No pain afterwards, I had to lie flat for two hours if I remember correctly.
I started chemo once the metastatic cancer was confirmed, unfortunately the chemo didn’t work but that was because I have Mucinous OC which can be resistant to chemo.

Thanks for the information KiwiGirl. Do you remember how long it took to recover from the biopsy? My oncologist prescribed five days worth of timed release morphine tablets, so I was wondering. Thanks much.

Hi, I had my biopsy about two years ago, I think I had a couple of days off work, I definitely didn’t need any morphine, I think I only needed paracetamol.
Like anything, it’s always the fear of the unknown, you will be fine 😊
