Chesty cough

Has anyone had the horrible chesty cough on Avastin. I’ve had it on and off since beg December. Really bad the last two weeks. Was given Augmentin but seemed to throw up an hour and s half after taking so GP advised going back to amoxicillin to complete course. I’ve no spleen and I do get conflicting advice on that. Temperature has been normal most of the time. Sleep is completely disturbed so feeling exhausted and my poor hubby is finding it hard to do things for himself without feeling guilty.

I haven’t had Avastin so can’t advise on the treatment for your rubbish cough, there is an awful cough and cold currently doing the rounds which is affecting lots of people. I just wanted to wish you a speedy recovery and hope you feel better soon. Healing hugs and love ❤️Xx Jane

I've had Avastin during chemo last year and finished beginning of January and am about to begin again for a year next week. Never got a cough. Just some aches in weak muscles now and then. Your nasty cough could be unrelated so best to get it sorted. Lots of Vitamin C and garlic as well as the meds. This time of year is bad for anyone who has weakness caused by illness so don't let it get away with you. Hope you are better soon. xxxx

Hi

Sorry to hear you have had such a nasty cough . Was on Avastin for a year but didn’t have a cough with it , lots of sinus / throat congestion in the morning on and off . As others have said there are some nasty bugs around at present so hope you start feeling better soon .

Love and best wishes Kim x💜

I’ve had a phlegmy (sorry) cough for about five years - I’ve got asthma which is well controlled, and my chest is always clear. The current thought is that it is down to acid reflux which I’ve also had for a while, but which I think was aggravated by Avastin. I’m taking Omeprazole which seems to help a bit, but I’ve really had to live with it.

If infection has been ruled out, and you have had all the tests they can do, ask them if acid reflux could be causing your symptoms. I have steam inhalation’s regularly and drink plenty of water which is supposed to loosen it all.

I hope you can find some relief soon, Ali x

Thanks for your reply. I’ve had reflux problems for seven years and I’m on omeprazole. My voice is very croaky right now. Not good when you are part of a choir. Despite exercises sometimes can’t get a note out! The chesty cough is new and although I had some nasal congestion when I started Avastin with occasional nosebleeds this feels different. Tummy feels sore and tight and minimal activity makes me breathless.

I know this is a longshot and I don't want to give you extra worry but do you know if you have a hernia? Have you had a fall or a jolt in the past. I say this as someone I know had a car accident many years ago and then after several years started with the reflux then bad coughs. Doctor kept treating her for pleurisy for two years. Then, finally had camera put down and turns out the car accident caused a minor hernia of the stomach and over the years the stomach had moved into the chest and was pushing on her lungs. Had operation and now well. Yours won't be so bad as she was a rare case but maybe significant. I have a minor hernia caused by something I can't remember and I get reflux if I go to bed with a full stomach or drink red wine.

Just because we have cancer doesn't mean we can't get other things going wrong. Xxxxxx

I was on Avastin for neatly three years and had my last dose in October. I had terrible trouble with a hoarse voice and excess mucous. After about 9 months this resulted in a rotten upper respiratory tract cough. I had carbosisteine to help loosen the mucous. My last dose was October and the mucous and cough is just beginning to ease.

Good luck.

I have a hoarse voice and excess mucous although not so much to my nose as was. Not good when you sing in a choir!

Oh dear - not good! I'd like to say it's spoiled my singing voice but much as I love it I couldn't hold a tune in a bucket! X
