A bit of information please ladies. I have recently had an op for a blocked bowel, caused by adhesions from my OC op. Recently, my hair, which was growing nicely after chemo, is coming out in handfuls! My scalp is visible in places. Since I am over a year since chemo, do you think this hair loss could be as a result of my recent op? I am hoping that someone out there can reassure me that they have experienced something similar, and that new hair will come through in time.

I am sorry I cannot help you, perhaps your body or immune system is under stress, I would visit my gp and have a check up just to be sure if the hair is falling out a lot/ Keep in mind we all shed hair during the year as well

Hi l had bowel problems and other complications after my operation for ovarian cancer. I struggled to recover and to add to it my hair fell out in handfuls. I was told by my district nurse that it was common for hair to fall out after major illnesses or operations. Six months later my hair which was never plentiful has started to grow again confirmed by my hairdresser and little tufty bits. It definitely doesnt fall out like it did. I have to admit l did look up on Dr Google!

So sorry Jenny. You have been through so much. You don't need this. Stress and upset affect people differently. Could you ask your GP? Xx

Hi Tracey. I will have to wait two weeks for a GP appointment unless it is urgent, which it obviously isn't. I have asked my daughter in law who is a hairdresser, and she said that hair loss can occur after an operation. I have also googled, and there are quite a few mentions of this, so I am feeling a bit reassured.

Good. It was looking lovely. Let's hope it slows and stops. My caelyx hair loss seems to have slowed......famous last words!

Stress can certainly affect our hair and the health of our bowels affects our whole body in many different ways , it may be worth asking your doctor just to make sure and for your own peace of mind ❤️Xx Jane

Yes I will Jane when I next see him.

Yes, although mine was over a longer period of time, rather than in clumps.

Have you had your magnesium checked - you will have done, but do you know the results? When I was in the hospital, I got supplements but wasn't told to continue them or that my magnesium was particularly low.

It hadn't been before the op. It was picked about 6 months later because I was on a clinical trial. This is a very common cause of hair loss and I cracked it by supplementing. But I am still doing it 18 months on in order to stay at the low end of normal range.

The other common cause is underactive thyroid.

Two things to get checked.... Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. Do they check for deficiencies when they do CA125 tests? I suspect not, so I could easily be deficient in certain areas. I will get a GP appointment.

Sometimes the first hair isn't good hair. Talk to oncologist some treatments have shown loss later. Best wishes Liz
