Teal awareness

Just been in hospital wearing my teal turban. Have been amazed that no one new it was the colour of Ovarian Cancer. That included oncology. Still work to do.

I was surprised how many people don’t realise the significance of Teal I bought myself a silver bracelet with a teal heart to promote it.

PhillipandBettykid, just my opinion but I think the whole teal thing is just a copy cat of pink for breast cancer. At least pink is a colour that people are familiar with. Not many even know that teal is a colour so you kind of have to educate for two things, the colour and the associated disease. Too much information to bridge perhaps.

Yes I think you are right but the pink campaign has been effective so I guess the ovarian community wanted to get on the band wagon. Pink for a girl was stolen so teal which is pretty and probably only recognized by girls 😄 Seems a good one as long as we sell it. What we need is a celeb who will support it like Glen McGrath in Aussie.

I am not surprised as people do not even know about OC.

It is not a copycat thing as someone mentioned as you will find that a lot of cancers have their colour.

We sold little knitted teddies for Maggie's made from all the different colours last year.

Many cancers have different colours, Leukaemia is orange. I didn't know until my son was diagnosed.

We do have a long way to go to get Teal the recognition pink has for breast cancer.

We need to be sharing the Teal message. Here in Australia we are buried alive in pink. When their campaign started it was well needed and ground breaking. Money, recognition and resources need to go to other cancers now. After much searching I now have three different Teal based bracelets which I wear most days.

My diabetic nurse asked me once if there was any significance to the teal badge I was wearing. She didn't know, though like most people she knew pink for breast cancer. She also told me the colour for prostate cancer, though I'm afraid I've forgotten what it is. Di

That’s really disappointing isn’t it? There is so much emphasis on pink for BC (and of course rightly so) but IC and our teal seems to pass under the radar..... more publicity needed for sure

Is teal for all guiny cancers though? So even more to explain. I don't say I have a guiny cancer but sometimes its classed as that rather than OC specifically.

Pink for breast cancer does work well because its simple. You may not understand from it that there are different ways to experience breast cancer but there is a general concept which one list of symptoms can be linked to. So its easier to say check for lumps for all of breast cancer.

With guiny cancers its not that easy. One thing to raise awareness of is the smear being for cervical cancer but not OC. The message becomes more difficult if CC and OC are both teal. There may be some similar symptoms but it does blur the message.

The most successful Awareness campaigns will be ones where there is a simple message.

Saying that its good that people ask what teal is for as it opens up the discussion and as such can raise awareness.

I didnt realise teal was for OC even when diagnosed. Bizarrely I did start wearing more teal post diagnosis as I was drawn to the colour!

Hi all. With the increasing emphasis on genetics rather than where a cancer originate in the body I wonder if this discussion may not be so relevant in a while. Using a genetic basis for classification may change a lot of the current categories we use. It will be interesting to see where this goes.
