Ulcers

Hi ladies just wondered have any of you any remedies apart from the obvious salt water for ulcers. I'm about to start cycle 5 of carbo/caelyx and from the last treatment have had horrible ulcers so bad I couldn't even talk. Although the ones in my mouth are getting better I've now got big ones on my lips. I've also tried Difflam but wondered if there was anything else.

Thanks Sue

I’ve had some blisters on the edge of my tongue and I followed Mac27’s advice regarding bicarb. It seems to have worked as they’ve never come back and I’ve kept it up every day.

Worth trying but would imagine you need something different for the ones in your lips.

I use Aquafresh mouthwash twice a day. Some mouthwashes are too strong and burn but this seems to be milder. If I miss a dose I get ulcers straight away so it must be working. Good luck x

Difflam did the trick for me as its both antiseptic and pain relief... My Onc wrote a prescription Sx

Difflam worked for me too. Just ate jelly and ice cream whilst they were really sore. Sounds weird but strepsils helped a little as they numbed my mouth a bit.

Hope you find something that helps. X

I had the same thing when I was on Caelyx, and my dr. prescribed Magic Mouthwash. It was really helpful. Kim xx

Hi Sue,

Have a look at Ali's post here - healthunlocked.com/ovacome/...

- it may be helpful, especially about the SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate), something I was warned about at the chemo clinic. It's what makes toothpaste froth and can cause mouth ulcers. Not good for us girls.

Hi SuSue, when Difflam didn't keep mine at bay, my onc. recommended brushing my teeth after every eating (I found using warm water kinder than cold!), gargle twice a day with dissolve-able aspirin but don't swallow it and then finally when these didn't control it (on dose-dense carbo/taxol+ Avastin) she prescribed a mouthwash of local anesthetic + steroid given to patients having radiotherapy for mouth and throat cancer. I just dabbed this each ulcer with a cotton bud and that ensured my mouth coped with a range of gentle, non-spicy foods.

Hi Sue...I also had difflam all the way through my chemo but towards the very end was prescribed some gel which I can't recall the name of sorry! it was in sachets and you diluted with water. My GP never heard of it when I asked him to prescribe it, it was my oncology nurse that recommended it, she said it was very expensive! You could ask your nurse/onc although I doubt this would help sores on the lips more for ones inside the mouth. Hope you find something that helps. jo xx

Some mouth sores are due to thrush. The right treatment for this clears it up
