following on from some other posts where people had a severe allergic reaction etc. to Taxol, a friend sent me a link - Abraxane also called nab-paclitaxel, according to British Gynaecological Cancer Society (BGCS) Epithelial Ovarian / Fallopian Tube / Primary Peritoneal Cancer Guidelines, is given in the UK to patients who are allergic to or do not tolerate paclitaxel. I know it's used for other types of cancer here in Ireland but has anyone heard of it been used for Ovarian Cancer? It seems it is a type of taxol drug but carried into the body via albumen, where as the paclitaxel & docetaxel are dissolved in solvent.

Absolutely! It's used to treat pancreatic cancer, not sure about protocols/licencing for O. C. Some say it's the solvent the drugs are resolved in that patients are allergic to, but Abraxane is carried in a protein -albumen which is more easily accepted by human body, it's also more expensive.
Hello there! My first 6 chemo sessions were of Abraxane with carbo, all given by IV although I had a IP port. I then went on to have 18 IV/IP with Cisplatin and Paclitaxel. Sorry I can't be of more help but do know my oncologist was insistent that I have the Abraxane first. The only major side effect I had with it was low Neutrophils. Good luck xx
Thanks so much for your reply, may I ask if you're treatment was IN Ireland? (or is your name a clue ? 😊) Also was it for Ovarian Cancer? I only ask because I'm unsure of licensing /protocol issues -seem to vary a lot. One other Q, had you had an allergic reaction to Taxol? Again, I ask because I've heard Dr's are reluctant to re-challenge a patient who had an anaphylactic reaction to any of the Taxol drugs. They don't seem to give IP ports either. Great to hear you had Abraxane & Carbo -you're the first person I've come across -thank you for sharing

Hi again G, yes, this was for OC stage 3B in Australia - Abraxane was used as an interim treatment for me until they could begin the ip as my onc wanted to begin asap (2 weeks after debulking op!) But said if i battled with ip he would revert to abraxane. I am out the other side now, 4 months post chemo with 1 st PET scan due mid Oct, so fingers crossed. Other than neutrophils constantly low and very little appetite i didn't have too many issues with abraxane. The metallic taste in your mouth is strong but i drank water with lemon or ginger constantly to counteract. Hope this helps and please let me know how you get on. Kind regards Stacey x
