Gene testing

Just as I was psyching myself up to ring to see what had happened to my results a letter arrived. It says 'you have and alteration in a gene valled BRIP1. This is likely to explain yourt history of ovarian cancer'. I was expecting a BRACA gene but this is a new one on me! Has anyone else heard of it?

Yes it's one of the newer ones they've identified Rachel... you are cutting edge!

Ask your genetic testing lab if you can have a face to face so they can explain more about it. I went to Addenbrookes who did my test and although some of the info went over my head it was really interesting and kind of reassuring xx

Hi Rachael, I am foxed by this as well. If you find out any more information let us know.

When I saw my onc last week a few of my questions was about gene testing I had done at the beginning of my treatment not for BRAC just to see why there is so much of oc in my family. I revived the same ansewer as before unless they find something you don't hear from them.

Does this mean you can be offered a Prep inhibitor?

Thanks for posting I am always interested in anything gene related. Take care Cindyxx

The letter was also to arrange for a follow-up meeting, at a place unspecified! I assume I will get another letter telling me where. I think I may try to get my daughter to come along, although that might not be practical. Good to be cutting edge. I was interested in gene testing as it had relevence to parp inhibitors, but I don't know if that is just BRACA genes. Will give further details when I get them.

What type of genetic testing did you undergo? Was it something suggested by your oncologist or did you arrange it privately?

I was referrred by my oncologist because of my family history. It was done by a doctor from St Georges I think, on day release to Guildford.

Hi Rachel. I have had testing on 4 type genes and don't identify with any of them. I have been told by a professor that I still have familial cancer because of my family history. It still means you will likely respond to PARP inhibitors which is good news.
