Stomach Cancer and Seconday Peritoneal Cancer

Hi I was told by my Consultant yesterday that my Cancer is incureable. At the moment I just feel like giving up as he said on average without Chemo I have 6 months to live with Chemo on average 12months. Just don't know whether to sort my finances out now and accept the inevitable or hope that I may be able to last a few years longer. Has anyone else had this Prognosis? Many thanks

I think you may be better finding a site specifically for stomach cancer as it's my understanding that all treatment is determined by the primary cancer and despite the location of secondary cancers, the cancer is still the primary one. Those with stomach cancer will doubtless have more information for you regarding the chemo options available to you and the likely side-effects.

Having said that, have you thought of seeking a second opinion? Not all consultants necessarily agree on the way forward, there are lots of grey areas. Even if the second opinion concurs with that of your consultant, at least you will have tried.

The only thing I would add to this is you're an individual NOT a statistic. My special person was told 6 months to live with chemo she's now 2 years 2 months later and on 3rd line treatment another lady on this site is 2.5 years and 4th line treatment, on another post yesterday I practically wrote the doctors only know what books tell them, so if you're feeling down and like there's not much hope please know there is always hope xxx

Comments like that really give me hope. I'm 52 and he did say it was quite young for my type of Cancer, so maybe I have a fighting chance. My husband,family and friends have been amazing, so my support network is very strong. Thank you for your comments x

It's a hard decision but you could take into account that those will be averages for people in your condition. If the chemo works it could be longer, or shorter. My thoughts are with you on making this hard decision.

Hi there, my friends dad had stomach cancer they gave him 6 months if he didn't take chemo a year if he did. He took everything they offered him & he has been cancer free for the last 3 years. It was really rough when he was going through his treatment but it was worth it.

January is right you need to go on a stomach cancer website. Good luck please fight for your life it is important to have a good team behind you. I have my daughter in law, son, grand children, sisters & friends. Take care Cindyxx

Hi ,First let me tell you I was told I would have 12 months it's near 3 years now, it has not always been easy but I've managed and you can too. Maybe a second option will set your mind at rest.

also to look at a site for stomach cancer would also be a good idea, as the ladies on that site maybe can give you advice and encouragement. you will find many ladies who have been given the same prognosis and years later are still in the fight.I hope you decide on the right decision for you, sending you my best wishes Lorraine xx

Yes, my treatment is palliative only and Yes, I have sorted my finances out as it needed doing, that doesn't mean you're giving up - it's just something that needs doing.

A prognosis also isn't a definitive timescale - so you've been told an average of 12 months? Who really knows? And better to live those months with everything sorted ?
