Tumour descriptors

Can you knowledgeable ladies explain to me what is a nodule (node) and what is a lesion. I know what a tumour is but get confused when these descriptors are used.

Thanks.

That's a bit technical!

I think a nodule of a lumpy bit , and a lesion as something on the surface. And they're probably both tumours.

We do have a few medically trained people on here who I'm sure will be able to advise. And tell me I'm quite wrong!

Hi Gwen - to the best of my knowledge a nodule could refer to a lymph node and a lesion I've always assumed to be a tumour! I was told I had a " nodule "on the tail of my pancreas but trying to get a straight answer from anyone was like trying to get an audience with the Pope! !!

Having read that back I realise I've probably been no help at all ( lol ), but I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be along 💖💖💖💖💖

Thanks Maz. You have to laugh don't you. It's what keeps us sane! But any comment from the lovely ladies on this site is helpful.

In my head (and with no medical knowledge!!) a nodule is a small bump, a lesion is a larger, flat-ish spread, and a tumour is a bigger lump.

Who says you need 7 years at medical school to be a Dr?! I can just make stuff up on the spot!

<hopes a more medically savvy person comes along soon...>

And, furthermore, what is a neoplasm?

Hello All

I hope this helps:

Nodule - a small lump (the size that would define a nodule can depend on where in the body it is)

Lesion - an abnormal area of tissue (as this is a broad general term, it can include tumours, but not all lesions are tumours)

Tumour - an abnormal growth in tissue

Neoplasm - another name for a tumour

All of these can refer to benign (ie non-cancerous) changes or cancerous changes in the body.

Best wishes

Anna

That's really helpful, thanks. And while we are on the subject, what about "thickening"?

The effect of chemo on my brain?! Just joking...

I besides OC have CLL! Horse of a different color. My Leukemia is under control, no treatment, just blood tests. It affects lymph nodes. I have a node in my left pelvic area that has been affected by the OC. It lit up in a Pet scan. It could be removed BUT there is a 50% chance it could cause Lymphedema (something I do not want, big swollen leg) Doctor is using chemo and just started RUBRACA to keep everything under control. I too am not 100% sure about a lesion. I thought it was more of a sore or open area. Could go on and on but have physical therapy this morning. My bones, shoulder and my body just hurts I'm assuming from 36 rounds of chemo!

In spite of everything have a great day!
