hair colouring

Hi lovely ladies, I want to put a colour on my hair, but I have been told I shouldn't until a year after chemo finished, any views on this. hugs to all, Jeanette xx

Hi jeanette. I was told the same but know ladies of ladies who have . nIve just learnt to live with the new me (white / darker at back lol) . Might be worth consulting a hairdresser you trust for advice? if you do colour your hair we'd love to see the result! . Kathy xx

I wish I could say I had a hairdresser on standby if my hair would just grow back. Its been almost 4 weeks since last chemo. I have some white hairs coming up but that's about it. Any suggestions?

I'm taking Biotin which seems to be having some effect. Hair has grown at different rates and various shades of grey, mouse and silver across my head i.e longer on the top and very close at the back. This morning on first glance in the mirror, I appeared to be channelling a peculiar mix of Einstein, Tin Tin and a young badger.

But growing it is...

Biotin is on offer at Holland & Barratt..

Good timing! My hairdresser is with me at the moment, doing my daughter's hair so I asked her. She advises that colour is fine. If you're nervous about the parabens in the colour, you can find a range in Holland & Barrett which is great and is totally natural. You can also use colour through a cap, so it doesn't touch the scalp.

Having said that, when I lost my hair during taxol, it took me a while to start again. I quite enjoyed the white short elfin look! It felt liberating. But I've regressed back now....

I also thought it was six months... My hair is yet to grow back but I've being dying my hair for so long it maybe a change to be natural for a while... With my look it will grow back awful colour .... Maybe it's hats on the horizon for me lol 😱😱😃😃😃

Macmillan told me 3 months vegetable dye or 6 months permanent. I was impatient and had roots and highlights 8 weeks later. The risk was hair falling out or colour failure but it was fine

Hi after carbo/taxol I waited about 3 months then my hairdresser did a colour test on my hair and just made sure my hair was strong enough before I had a colour put on. It was fine. X

I used Loving Care wash in and wash out and then moved on to Loving Care semi permanent and that worked ok for me. I have tried using the veggie colours but they dont last very long to be honest so went to what worked for me. Both I mentioned are amonia free etc and give fairly good coverage

I was told a year and I have been colouring my hair since I was 18,but have been brave and gone for the Annie Lennox pixie cut look.

To be honest, I would have never had the confidence before,but I thought s.d it! so many have said it suits me,but it's never been in better condition and I'm sticking with it girls, do whatever you are comfortable with

Thank you for all your comments about hair colouring, I am a bit impatient and really dont like the 50 shades of grey I have at the moment, I am lucky that my hair didn't fall out this round as it did the first time, so I'm thinking I might go for a non amonia colouring , but will maybe wait a couple of weeks before I do it, Watch this space, hugs to everyone, Jeanette xxx

I finished chemo in January and had my hair coloured in April - only tint no bleach and has been fine. Didn't know about the time limit but glad I didn't.

Also have been using the Lee Stafford products for hair growth and hair appears to be growing quicker and stronger - worth a try.

I've also been using the Lee Stafford range, along with Viviscal supplements and my hair is growing back really well, and I've had many comments about how fast it's returning. I'm six weeks on from my last chemo and went bareheaded in public today and no one batted an eyelid. I didn't lose all my hair - the white stayed and the red fell out, but it's grown back almost black. As it's such a different look for me, as I coloured mine red to hide the white hairs before, I'm not too sure how long I'll resist colouring.

I had thought the same, but after 6 months I really do not like the many shades of grey, although it was quite nice not having to colour it every 6 weeks. xxx

My hair has never really fallen out completely. My husband shaved it when it was patchy but it has kept growing. I used to colour mine with a wash in wash out variety called "La Riche" - mostly turquoise or purple. I might try it again as soon as my hair is long enough to show.

Hi Jeanette. I was told 'about 6 months' but I guess it depends on the condition of your hair. First time round after my hair grew back I waited but this time I wanted to try colouring so used 'Daniel Field' natural dye (do an Internet search) after someone on here recommended it. It's not specifically for cancer patients but it is much gentler with non of the usual chemicals and is still reasonable at about £10. I usually colour my hair myself but It looked a bit faffier to put on so I asked my hairdresser if she knew anything about it. She said a client of one of one of the other hairdressers in the salon uses it and said she would do it for me (for a nominal charge- £5 I think?). It didn't have that 'hair colour smell' and made my hair really soft and although it maybe didn't last quite as long it did cover the grey nicely.

Maybe you could ask your regular hairdresser what she thinks?

You can color your hair but it might not come out as you like or at all. Have you finished chemo yet? If not, don't bother coloring. It takes a year for the chemo to get fully out of your body.

I waited 6 months the first time after chemo. This time after reoccuance, I did it 4 months after my last treatment. My hair was healthy enough to preceed with a blond color. No problems. Good luck with your decision.

Correct! You don't want any chemicals from the hair coloring to interfere or be detrimental to you.

You do want to begin taking probiotics to help in other ways.

Hi Jeanette,

In my opinion your hair is a beautiful grey which it would be a shame to colour. I have decided to leave mine grey and get so many compliments! I'm also keeping the shorter style instead of growing it back to my old bob as everyone loves it.

I've decided to go with the new me (as the old one was unwell) and believe that as long as you have a good cut, never go out without your lippy and always dress as best as you can, be it smart or casual, that grey has a unique chic style all of it's own! I recommend you try embracing it! There is a freedom about not colouring it - and more to spend on other things!

No one mentioned waiting to dye my hair. When I went to get my hair cut for the first time after chemo my hairdresser suggested toner - non permanent. She had to try a couple of times to get the right combo but the result is that I have lavender/purple hair. It lasts about 3 weeks and I can get the supplies and do it myself at home. I love it.

As soon as my hair grew back(about 2 inches) from first line my hairdresser coloured it with veg dye which we continued until I had enough to properly dye 😊 I'm now on second line and the steer has been as long as the dye doesn't touch the scalp you should be fine so my hairdressers uses foils to colour and so far so good xx
