Hi knowledgeable ones,

Could you please tell me what CNS stands for, and also a week or so ago someone mentioned a book by Jean Servan (I think) Have I got the name right, as I can't find any trace of anyone by that name.

Many thanks Jenny

Hi Jenny,

CNS stands for clinical nurse specialist, and I think the book you are looking for is by David Servan-Schreiber called Anti Cancer - A new way of life, hope this helps.

Take Care

in US CNS means central nervous system

It does here too. Trouble is there are lots of them with multi meanings. MDT - multidisciplinary team or in tropical medicine - multi drug therapy. PR - public relations or if you are a nurse per rectum. Maybe those last two are more related than others. 😀

In the context that it is used to me, it definitely means Clinical Nurse Specialist. I must admit, I don,t understand a lot of these abbreviated terms!

Yes it is Clinical Nurse Specialist, it means they have specialised in their field, be it Chemo or whatever, hope that doesnt sound patronising but not meant to be. Yes there are so many things we are expected to understand but we are just mere mortals

In the UK also CNS stands for Central Nervous System but you would only need to know that if you are a medic or studied biology. CNS can stand for clinical nurse specialist or sometimes Cancer nurse specialist. Not all consultants have them though and some a macmillan funded and some are not.

I think they do sometimes use CNS in for eg letters to GPs for central nervous system but they shouldn't if they are copied to us. I always get a copy and take it with me if I go away so there's a summary if I need any treatment. Hasn't happened yet though.
