Blood Transfusion

Just had last cycle of third line chemo and told I need a blood transfusion as my haemoglobin is really low.

I can refuse and just build up my levels slowly myself or go with the transfusion. Not sure what to do?!,!?!

Any experience/ advice welcome!

Thank you xxxx

Hiya...I had a blood transfusion during chemo for this reason. I can only say that it made me feel loads better..more energetic. Of course levels would gradually return but why wait if they are offering? Xx

Thank you! I know it seems like a no brainer, just concerned about what antibodies etc I will be taking on in addition to the positive effects of the energy boosting red blood cells. X

Hi. I have found blood transfusions really useful in keeping my haemoglobin, platelets and nuetrophils on track as I progressed through chemotherapy. For me it was like having central heating installed. Brought back colour to my cheeks and warmed up my hands and feet. No complications in my case. Also met some more interesting people at the hospital.

Best Wishes

Hi

I had 4 blood transfusions one after my op and 3 whilst having weekly chemo, I wouldn't have been able to complete the treatment if I hadn't had them. Felt much better after them as well:) Don't think they've done me any harm, I'd never of been able to build up my levels naturally it would have taken too long.

Good luck with whatever you decide,

Take care

Well I think I would go with the transfusions as you will soon feel loads better. You can also add in foods rich in iron to keep up your levels when you are back to eating in a few weeks.

I had several blood transfusions with first line. The worst was when I was finding it hard to breathe. I wasn't exactly breathless, just laboured. The blood transfusion sorted it out straight away. Several of my friends now give blood because they have realised how important it is. I haven't needed any for the last 5 years but would have it again and it would seem unkind to refuse their gift. But it depends how low your haemoglobin is and how long it is likely to take you to build it up naturally.

It's of course personal. However I can tell you that transfusion was a powerful help. I could not walk from car to house. I was without any energy. Transfusion made me feel better and enabled me to eat walk a little and feel better.

I hope you feel better. I know how tough it is!!

I have had two blood transfusions because of low blood count and getting so weak I could not walk. Immediate recovery after my transfusions. I couldn't have made it through my chemo without them. I understand there are risks but for me they were a life saver.

do it! it helps immensely. i've had four, i believe, and the improvement is quite miraculous. this is an old, well proven therapy. you will feel better, significantly so.
