Hi folks, I just had my first chemo with carbo and caelyx and feel quite anxious about possible side effects of this one. If you have any tips to help manage or avoid side effects please let me know. Had portacath fitted last friday and it worked fine today - so far so good.

I'm watching this post with interest as I will be where you are in a few weeks. When I asked about this regime, some of the suggestions were organic or non perfumed creams like aqueous cream for hands and feet 3 or 4 times a week. Lovis who I saw yesterday, who is on this regime suggested making sure that you don't get over hot, keep your hands and feet cool to stop the sweat.

But a lot of people seem to be coping quite well on the regime and finding it not as bad as they anticipated , so I hope the same for you

Hi Francesca

Angie found Caelyx quite tolerable and while some ladies have had rather sore mouths, she didn't. I do know she took extra care with mouth hygiene so maybe that helped. The biggest problem was with her skin becoming dry and itchy and particularly on her hands. This got progressively worse as the treatment progressed. She gained some relief using Aloe Vera Gel from Holland and Barrett. After discussion with her oncologist she also took Piriton and she swore that helped a lot and wished she had done it right from the beginning. Another trick she learned was to start taking Movicol a day or two prior to chemo day as this kept any constipation to a minimum. On the upside, of course there is little hair loss with Caelyx, but Angie was delighted to lose all the hair she didn't want to keep and it saved me a fortune in razors lol. Best wishes for a very successful treatment.

My Mum is having her 4th out of 6 caelyx and carbo (4 weekly) this week. We were recommended udder cream for the skin conditions! Have a look at the udderly smooth website. I ordered a load for Mum and she hasn't suffered at all - its really nice stuff and I use it too for dry skin conditions! Mum has had one bad month where she ended up being admitted for a few days to get her sickness/dehydration symptons sorted out but other than that has not been too bad - nausea tiredness etc as you would expect for a couple of weeks then she's really well for 2 weeks. No hair thinning which is the best bit for Mum. Just hope it can put her into a long period of remission. So far she's had 12 months after carbo/taxol and 7 months after the last one (which I can't remember the name....)

Hope you get on ok

Hello Francesca. My Mum had her second Caelyx today. So far she hasn't had any peeling of the hands or has not felt particularly hot. She has some udder cream to apply should the side effects start. I think she's on Caelyx alone but I see you have Carbo too. I guess the oncologists do what's best for the individual. Mum hasn't had to have a line fitted yet. The nurses are still finding veins at the moment!! She's anxious as she's been told she won't know if the chemo's working until after the third one. Anxious time. Best wishes. Jane X

Hi Francesca. Phew, sorry to hear how poorly you've been. Mum had her second Caelyx today. She's got to have some of those injections to boost the white blood cells as they were borderline and it was touch and go as to whether the chemo would go ahead today. She was very ill on a couple of occasions with the fourth injection so she's going to have one on Mon, Tue and Wed then have a blood test on Thur to see how the count is looking.

I hope you are feeling a lot better now. Everyone reacts so differently don't they. I'm so nervous about Mum having her scan after the third chemo (I think). Or it may happen after the fourth. But she still looks really well. V tired but that's to be expected.

Best wishes. Jane XX

I'm feeling a lot better now thanks and fingers crossed the sickness is under control so should be going home today. Glad your mum got her chemo. No doubt I'll have to have the white cell boosting injections as my white cells have had so much hammering over the years. Just looking forward to going home and seeing my family and cat and my gorgeous granddaughter who is 1 next week

I hope your mum does ok now. Francesca x

Mum has had two injections. Third tomorrow then blood test on Thursday. Mum has never had any problem with sickness and has had the tablets available in case. Best wishes. Jane X
