Hi all. My husband was diagnosed with stage 4 oesophageal cancer last November that has spread to his liver. He was given one year to live. He is now half way through chemo and herseptin which will carry on after his chemo until it stops working. I am just asking if there is someone out there who can give me a little hope. Is there anyone who has survived this type of cancer without surgery or do I just have to accept that I will lose him in a few months.

Hi Taraharp. I’ve heard of cases with chemo and radio enabling patients who were not surgery candidates to have surgery and get a good outcome. There are also rare cases I’ve read of chemo and radio delivering a complete response and that being adequate treatment.
Don’t give up hope. Hopefully your husband has a good response to treatment and that may lead to other options. There are also trails and new treatments coming out periodically.

Thank Brett I am trying to be positive but the doctors do not give me any hope. As you say the cases that get further treatment are rare so I should still plan for the worst.
I’ve heard of numerous cases that fall into the category of the cancer that has spread (eg liver) disappearing from treatment, allowing attempt at cure by surgery for example. I don’t know enough of the detail to give you stats but it is within the realm of possibility. I’ve read numerous such stories. Fingers crossed…

Sad to read your post. My husband has secondary stage 4 oesophagus cancer (metastasis to liver, lung, spine (at sacrum), pelvis and tongue) diagnosed in Dec 2020.
He is currently being treated with Folfox/chemo immuno therapy (fortnightly sessions for 2 months) He is having 5 daily radiotherapy to his spine and pelvis to ease pain in these 2 areas.
We are praying for good outcome from blood tests and scans after chemo sessions have finished.
We are in Australia do I hope this info shared could give you ideas to ask your husband's medical team for possibilities.

HiThank you for your mail. My husbands cancer is in his liver and lungs at the moment. He is half way through the chemo and they will then give him herseptin every 3 weeks after that. They say it will be months not years after that as the herseptin will not work for long. It is such a shock isn’t it and such a horrible cancer that creeps up on you without you knowing until it is too late. He was only diagnosed last November and they gave him only a year.
I do hope the treatment can make your husband more comfortable and the blood tests give you hope.

So sorry to know of your story.
The drs always will advise based on the worst case scenarios in each medical case.
There are so many other variables in each case which may improve things for the people involved to certain degree. Suggest speak to local cancer support charities for counselling and just some listening ears, if closer to your location.
Thank you for your email Mauser. It is so good to know there is someone out there that understands. Yes I hope the drs are looking at worst case scenario. I try to be optimistic but it is exhausting. The future is quite scary as many people will agree. Thank you again
