3 year old not sleeping through

LowestoftMumOfTwo profile image

My little boy is 4 (nearly 4) and wakes up pretty much the same time each night and calls out to me (very loudly), he won't settle unless he comes in bed with me.

Sometimes he just calls me but sometimes he gets a little upset. This has been going on for ages. He has only slept through the whole night about three times.

Does anyone have any help or advice as to why he wakes up and what I can do to make sure he sleeps through.

He has a projector so I make sure he is not in the dark and his room is the right temperature. He also has a new comfy bed so I am at a loss as to what it could be.

Thank you 😀

Dear LowestoftMumofTwo

It sounds like you are having a tricky time with sleep. It can be hard when children don't sleep through the night.

Things that can help is having a calming bedtime routine and limiting screen time to at least an hour before bed.

There is also the Solihull programme you can complete online and I will include a link for you. The solihull programme also talks about sleep and talks about the disappearing chair routine.

Will include these links for you.

You also mentioned that he wakes up at the same time every night and sometimes gets upset. You can look at the link regarding nightmares and night terrors and if you feel that this is what might be the reason for your son waking up. The website will give signs that might indicate this and will also offer advice on what you can try.

As you live in Suffolk, you can make contact with the Suffolk health visiting team who also can support around sleep.

Kindest regards

Thank you so much that's really helpful. I have to lay with him when I put him to bed and leave when he falls asleep so I will take a look at the Solihull Programme. The night terrors may be why he is waking as when I go to him he always says he's scared. Thank you.

Dear LowestoftMumofTwo

For the night terrors, I have included a link for you from the NHS website regarding night terrors and night mares. Hopefully this will be useful for you to look at.

Keeping a sleep diary might also be beneficial. The link will have suggestion on what might be helpful to implement when children experience night terrors or night mares

Sometimes when kids become more aware of needing a wee, then their body wakes them to go. It might be worth doing a sleepy wake and walk to to a potty/toilet around 10/11pm and that might be enough to empty the bladder and help him go through the night.
