Tip Thursday - Hand Washing

NorfolkHealthVisitor profile image

As this is something that is on people's radar at the minute.

I know it can be a struggle for children to understand they need to wash their hands, even when they're not obviously dirty...

So do you have any tips for getting children of different ages, to wash their hands?

My tips are to make sure u change the towels in your bathroom regularly, cos you want to dry your hands on something clean.

I got my daughter to watch a hand washing video as,it’s not just 20secs of washing the same bit of your hand but 20secs to do different areas, like washing thumbs and between fingers.

My littler one watches his sister and copies. They’ve started to have competitions to see who can get there hands the bubbliest from one pump of hand soap.

Any more tips to make it fun would be helpful!!,as my daughter is dramatic and can be a worrier and I don’t want her to think its something to worry about. Do u know what I mean?!!?

Absolutely love the competition idea!! Will be trying that game with my 3 year old!!

For younger children maybe going down the route of a reward chart? My son goes nuts for stickers so that could be good way to get him to want to wash his hands properly?

My children are older (7 years plus) and all seem really aware of the coronavirus (and were initially freaked out). We downloaded a children’s leaflet on the virus for them so they had some facts - which said to wash hands. Giving them information really helped as Washing hands has been an easy and practical way to help them feel in control a little and reassure them they are doing something to help them stay well. An extra thing we also do is have extra packs of tissues and baby wipes everywhere - in the car/bag and I hand them out regularly for the children to have in their pockets and use when out and about - particularly when hand washing is not accessible. Lol they don’t always take them or are that willing but just having it part of our routine is helping normalise it.
