Holidays.....

Now 7 months after my op, I have just returned from a 7 day cruise round the Adriatic with my wife. (1st holiday in 31 years without the children ) a break we both needed especially my wife, who has been a great support to me.

For anybody who has recently had the op or those who are thinking about it have a holiday, get away and recoup and enjoy yourself.

The main problems I came across are, firstly insurance, you have to be clear for 2 years (if you are away and fall ill with a cancer related problem you are not insured). The other problem I had was the occassional off day (only lasted a few hours, `dumping` ). Took tablets with me, lanaprozine, tramadol, paracetamol, and a supply of glucose tablets and snack bars, just incase!!!!

Went for a lie down when I started feeling `off`, relax, cat nap and within a couple of hours started to feel better.

Overhaul came back feeling a lot better........even managed to put on a couple of pounds.

Still taking each day as it comes, learning a bit more each day and listening to what my body tells me. Best regard to all.

Really glad you had a good holiday, Mick. It is one of those things you do when you are really starting to get over it all, and your wife probably needed it even more than you, as you say.

Insurance is often an issue. Some policies are available provided that they exclude cancer-related claims, and there is a section on the Macmillan website that might be useful for others:

I went out to see my daughter who lives in Spain 6 months after my op which was 5 years ago now. Had a good time and the sunshine did us all good. Whenever we go away now I go armed with the pills and snacks.

Since that first holiday we have been to Maderia, and on safari in Kenya as well as driving to Spain in our motorhome several times, long may it continue!!
