Endoscopy, full of food

Bit of a strange one just wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I Went for my endoscopy today no major issues however the consultant said that I had a full stomach, I was shocked as I hadn't eaten this morning and yesterday I had diarrhea pretty much all day and a feeling of bloating and being unwell.

For a few days prior to this I was in pain and uncomfortable and again unwell.

I was shocked when he said my stomach was full I didn't think I could be after yesterday. Anyone else experienced this? Thanks

hi Refs, this happens to me, it was a regular occurrence in the early days. I got to the point where I would have soup for 3 days then clear liquids for 2 days, and just water for a day before an endoscopy so they could see what was happening. Still happens if I don't follow the above 12 years on. It also helps that I don't get hunger pains. Just a bit tired. Hope you feel better soon

Sounds like gastroparesis. I'm surprised the consultant didn't offer an explanation.

Hi. Thanks for your response. But nothing was said on the matter. But I'm up in Birmingham next week so I'll bring this up.

I do think that he thought I'd eaten .

Had similar stomach cramps / pains after eating. Barium swallow also saw a non-emptying stomach - now on an anti-sickness drug which aids the already mentioned gastroparesis - metoclopramide 3 times a day. Surgeon was a bit wary as it has some pretty severe side effects if they effect you, like developing symptons that look like Parkinson's disease, but oncologist say they use it all the time for people on chemotherapy. Seems to be doing the trick as well.

Never had this but overheard a rather perplexed patient as I was waiting after the medics refused the procedure due to the diagnosis she had eaten when strictly told not to and her partner supporting her saying she hadn’t . Have you had the results back yet ? I had so many tests . I thought I was part of a covert experiment. Finally found hiatus hernia - large tear . Long wait for surgery and the wait was agony . The usual things - bloating , fatigue, toilet problems. Insomnia.., all boring to doctors and so so common but if you have it yourself it controls all about you , within you . Post surgery and a lot of determination in the way of strict food , exercise , changing career etc but the confidence and continued good health to do it . All I am saying is be a nuisance, be persistent, don’t take no for an answer .

Thanks for your reply. I will bring it up with my consultant.

hi

I have had this on several occasions and I am 12 years post op. I have had 3 endoscopy’s and they have not been able to complete the procedure. I am waiting to have another one. I get very bloated and feel very uncomfortable.

Take care x

yes, this could be gastroparesis, when the food move through the stomach too slowly. And you can still have diarrhea at the same time. Confusing, yes, but I know several (including myself) which can confirm this is the case. Probably a side effect from surgery.

Have you had an Esophagectomy? I don’t see any comments that you have.

A full stomach for someone after an Esophagectomy is different when the stomach is now your esophagus!

Hi Petercaron.I had Esophagectomy on April 15, 2022, and my stomach is my new esophagus. My surgery took place at Apollo Hospital, India.

I have this issue of my stomach not emptying. It causes nausea and increased acid reflux. I get botox put in the pylori sphincter to resolve the issue and get meds for the nausea and additional med for acid. The botox works for awhile and then needs to be repeated.

hi Refs

I have had endoscopies where my tummy is still full, they even put me on a liquid diet for 48 hours prior and it was still full, so in the end they gave me a tummy stretch, which helped a lot, I’ve had two now. I was also put on antibiotics low dose to empty the tummy as I am allergic to domperidone and metaclopamide. Hope this helps.

Nine years on and this still happens to me from time to time. My surgeon has sometimes given me a Botox injection to the pylorus valve during the procedure to keep it from shutting over time and it seems to work ok, at least delaying the inevitable next shutdown. But I'm in the US, not sure if it's approved where you are.
