6 week check up

Had my 6 week check up yesterday with my surgeon, specialist nurse and dietician.

They are all delighted with my progress and won’t see me again until my chemo is finished. I was quite surprised that in all future follow ups/ monitoring they do not do any form of scans.

Hi,yes I was the same .but I think they thinking there not good for you anyway, they probably won’t show every little thing up,and you’d be stressing over the result for weeks before, like what they call scan anxiety..I’ve just gone past 12 months post op,and said they will see me every 4 months..mainly for a chat unless I think something is not right..and once you get passed 2 years, should be in the clear..I’ve already started to not think about it ,and get on with it…😊 you sound very confident and things do get better..so all the best, nearly there and one step closer

FYI you may get scans of you want them and ask for them . I asked as I have a young family and could do with as much advance notice as possible if it's coming back, as I was told by my surgeon there's no second surgery option. If it comes back they will just be managing it as best they can.

Thankfully I've just passed two years with six monthly scans and all has been ok. I'm now on to annual scan until the five year mark.

So, if you want them, you can certainly ask 🙂

I can understand your reasons with a young family. I also understand scan anxiety as he did mention there’d probably be no surgery option should it return .Thanks for your response and good luck for the future xxx

I am 72 years old and get a cat scan every 6 months and a meeting with my oncologist. I am approaching 4 years post esophagectomy.

Are you in the UK? Is it that different in the United States?

Hi glad they are pleased with your progress. Yes that is normal unless you get problems then they will scan or do and endoscopy. Sometimes if you are on a trial they will do more scans. Best Wishes

Debbie

Congratulations to hear that ypu are recovering well!My husband is 14 months post IL and he only got scans a few weeks ago. I understand that it is normal for scans to be done after 12 months post op.
