Doxycycline - any way we can take it?

Hi, I've had an embedded/Chronic UTI since May, I think, which just keeps coming back, and back, and back again. Today, while putting meds away I spotted a pack of Doxycycline I'd been given for a sinus infection but had never used because it is contraindicated if you have oesophagitis. Tonight, desperate and not wanting to phone the docs yet AGAIN, I decided to take the first dose because we all know they worry too easily in these packet inserts,

Oh no, they don't. It burnt almost immediately on swallowing and only stops if I eat something. However, it did seem to help the UTI. I haven't tried these for the UTI and would like to try them, but if it is doing this from first dose then I'm worried that six more days of this will burn right through my windpipe.

Has anyone managed to take a course of these? If so, how did you do it? Or am I being an idiot for even thinking of it? I wondered if I could switch back to Omeprazole just to take them (I use H2 blockers currently) or if I could get by by patching judiciously with antacids in the timescales they allow.

Anyway, if anyone has managed to use these, or knows for sure it's a really bad idea I'd like to hear from you. Thanks!

I had an oesophagectomy 14 years ago and I've twice taken doxycycline for sinus infections in the last five years. I also take pantoprazole 20mg daily. However, I wouldn't take any medication without consulting a doctor.

Thanks, Spikey - I decided against it. I'm goign to put it into the chemists for disposal - too risky.
