Anti inflammatories

Singforyoursupper profile image

Am I right in thinking I shouldn’t use anti inflammatories for pain relief as a ‘stomachless’ person? I remember a nurse telling me this after my surgery but is this long term advice? I need it for something unrelated (hip) and paracetamol isn’t really enough today.

Thanks!

You can take NSAIDS ( Anti-inflammatory such as high dose aspirin or Ibuprofen) as a oesophagectomy survivor. this is normal provided you are not allergic to the said medicines.

Provided you are not suffering from stomach ulcers, gastritis etc currently.

Thank you. I’m couldn’t really see a reason not to now - and as I take all tablets crushed or dissolved it will soon be in my gut.

I have been prescribed anti-inflammatories for back pain on a couple of occasions since having my oesophagectomy 14 years ago, without experiencing any stomach problems. I was however advised to double my daily PPI medication to 40mg of pantoprazole, because they can cause an increase in stomach acid.
