I was new a few days ago to you all I I always heard you all saying Ivor Lewis .So I decided to look this up. And my judgement is All off us(most of us) Has had our Gulet removed and our stomach pull up? Right

Ivor Lewis or Oesophagectomy is most commonly offered surgical treatment in many cases where the diagnosis of the Oesophageal cancer is in a stage where the surgical removal of the oesophagus and stomach offers mainly curative option or optimised outcome otherwise.

In other cases variety of chemo and radiation therapies along with surgery/or not, may be option as well.

In some of the cases the surgery is not an option and unfortunately the patients are referred for palliative pathway. There is also a separate "OPA Palliative Care & Guidance" Forum on this website.

There are also carers' family members and friends on this forum, whom are not necessarily patients themselves. There is a very good mix of kindhearted people with different phases on their individual journeys. For sure I don't think it is possible to say if all here had surgery, but can say many of us had had one.

I had my op 7 years ago and eating habits had to change - little and often - and not drinking and eating solids at same time. I am still here is the main thing at 75.

I am nearly 8 yrs post op, been an interesting journey so far, I've just come out of hospital after having a rogue stitch removed from my original op! I am 58 and intend to go on for a lot longer 😁

How did the rogue stitch come to light?

Hi there, grandylynda,

I noticed a little lump in my belly button which I thought was part of the op, ( scar tissue), but then it started to weep, one night we went to bed and I had blood everywhere, went to docs and he said it was an abscess, so for 12 months treated me with cream, but it just got worse, eventually had an apt with upper GI, she said it was a stitch sinus, it had caused a tube which had an infection, I've a telephone apt on the 9th which I'm assuming will be the results of histology, which I'm praying will turn out to be nothing!

Oh dear, hope results are ok. I wouldn't notice any little bumps. I had a huge diaphragmatic hernia last Nov, probably due to weakness from the op. Compare the scar down my front with the Ivor Lewis one and there is no doubt which was the emergency surgery. Looks like I was cobbled back together by a novice while the top guys went to the next emergency. Still, I am very grateful to have lived to tell the tale and past caring what my body looks like. I'm so sorry to hear that, its hard to love your scars isn't it? But I look at mine as trophies, trophies I've won in a hard battle, I lost my brother in August to cancer and I've gone through guilt, grief and all sorts. But we are blessed. I hope you have a speedy recovery and you grow stronger by the day x

Yes most of us haveour stomach pulledd up ,takes a bit of getting use to , but worth it in the log run , stay safe guys
