Omeprazole rebound

Hi everyone,

My doctor prescribed me omeprazole 20mg twice a day for the feeling of a lump in the back of my throat. After a few days that sensation disappeared, but then I started to get acid reflux(which I’ve never had before), and severe anxiety so after 11 days I stopped taking the ppi. It’s been 7 days since taking them now and I’m still getting the same symptoms apart from that they are worse. The burning in my chest keeps me awake most nights also the bubbling in my stomach. It’s making me feel ill mostly all day too. Is this the sign of ppi rebound?, if so, how long do you think this will last? Thanks

The changes in symptoms could be for many different reasons. The medication may not be appropriate and you should refer back to your GP. Best wishes Tanktank

Dear,

First thing you must do is have a early dinner. Finish your dinner at 6 PM. Have a salad later at around 7. Reason for reflux is indigestion. Above routine will help you digest your food better. I have completely recovered from reflux. I can help you too.

If you only took 20mg twice a day for 11 days, I think it is unlikely that you are suffering from a "PPI rebound". However, you may be suffering from an adverse reaction to the medication. I was told many years ago by my doctor that approximately 15% of patients suffer from side effects to omeprazole. I suggest you go back to see your GP. Good luck.

Spikey, I believe that is exactly what was happening to me. A reaction to omeprazole! My Dr was changing from one ppi to another, I believe all those changes gave me a reaction. Since I stopped taking it I started feeling better. I am now taking only Pepcid when it is needed.

I have a question. Can the ulcer that I have been treated without the use of PPIs?

I started feeling better two days after I stopped taking omeprazole and I don’t want to take it again. Can the ulcer and acid gastritis be healed with only a diet?

I have a small bowel neuropathy. I have, for 25 years ,been told is acid reflux but it isn't. Its far worse, but I lived on acid retarders.I eventually weighed 6 stones, I had weeks in Addenbrokes and I ended up dumping the drug myself. It was obvious to me that it was rubbish, it did nothing but the doctors seem to rely on the stuff.Eventually I could eat, I took another 3 years to recover because the nerves set in, the terror of going to bed and the stomach going empty and the burning stuff seeping in.In January I had shingles and it set off the neuropathy again. The anti-viral set off the 'acid' . Again I was told to take Omprezole and Gaviscon, it worsened dramatically. A living hell, starving to death again, what felt like a dozen ulcers. One day the doctor messed up my prescription, I ended up without it and guess what, within a week I was eating again. After 4 weeks I'm normal. Don't eat after 4.30pm, dump the drugs and try to think happy thoughts.Oh I walked 6 miles a day, it gets the whole thing functioning better. In both instances I have had to drop the wheat for few months, this seems to cause constipation in me which makes the neuropathy worse and it causes indigestion. Worth a try for a few weeks. You never really get to know what's going on inside. A CT scan revealed nothing. You have to get used to the idea that you don't need the doctor, you are the best expert around . I nearly died twice from nothing, basically.
