Does Silent acid reflux cause burping?

I have been suffering from silent acid reflux for just over two months, tried two different PPis but still suffering each day from morning to night. I also burp after meals and drinking, can burping be a symptom of silent acid reflux? I am having an endoscopy next week and just hoping it is not somethig more sinister.

Hi,

I’ve had similar issues but only night-time reflux, I was bringing blood up into my throat from somewhere. I had excess wind and acid indigestion after meals. the PPI’s were not working, I was hardly sleeping.

Anyway I had the endoscopy 6 weeks ago. It came back clear of any abnormalities thank fully. So to summarise since the endoscopy I have relaxed my anxious tendencies which I had prior to the endoscopy and have cut Caffeine completely and Alcohol to a couple of drinks (2 or 3 bottles of lager) per week. I eat more white meat than red. I workout every day and have lost weight.

I’ve stopped taking PPI’s and my diet and subsequent weight loss has contributed to me no longer having the night time reflux. I no longer need Gaviscon either.

I know it’s difficult to relax and very easy to panic yourself but it seems my illness was worse during the weeks before when I was constantly worried about things. The camera procedure should put your mind at ease, hopefully it’s good news, and a few tweaks with diet will help afterwards?

I feared the worse and when I received an appointment for Encology before I got the results, I got the Will out contacted re death grants and wrote my goodbyes. Only to find it was a clerical error and my results were pretty much clear but I was still coughing up blood and unable to swallow properly.I was sent for a CT scan which said nothing detected. Then my lovely local Romanian doctor had a brain wave...Could it be post nasal drip.

She prescribed a nasal spray and within a week I’d stop coughing and my throat returned virtually to normal I would say I continue to be 95% symptoms free.......so I don’t cough at at all anymore...so don’t be negative..I know it’s difficult , it it may be something simple

All the best

Hi, I have silent reflux and burp constantly. I had a Nissen fundoplication and prior to that I burped all the time also. After the Nis, I did not do that, the Nis had to be reversed and I am back to it again. Gas, too. Also no results from meds. I am ok with food but cannot find any beverage that I want to drink. That may be part of my problem. I lost a ton of weight and while that was great, it did nothing for the acid. Good luck to you.

Hello and good morning Jow27,

Has your acid reflux been diagnosed as LPR? Laryngopharyngeal Reflux? By the GI team?

Endoscopy next week, have you been advised to stop the PPIs you are currently taking as a precursor to the gastroscopy by your GI dept?

Wind is a common side effect of taking acid reducing medicines like PPI or H2 blockers.

Burping during and post meals for a few times is normal.

Burping more times may be linked to other conditions as well loose sphincter at GE junction. If this happens then it should have heartburn in parallel. If acid reflux present.

Try to relax, will help muscles around oesophagus and stomach to be normal for the gastroscopy.

Hi there,

Not had a confirmed diagnosis of LPR but have many of the symptoms. My endoscopy is tomorrow so I stopped taking the PPIs as soon as the appointment was confirmed last week. Not had any rebound effects and actually feel OK but my bowels are all over the place.

Ok. LPR diagnosis is more difficult than GERD, waiting till more diagnostics point to significant probable cause for the issues is confirmed may keep all the root causes open. My view.

Well done on stopping the ppi for scope. It's an acid reducing agent so bowels will be handling the food at normal efficiency. Typically its gradual reduction when coming off for the digestive system to adapt to the changes.

Good luck with your copy tomorrow.
