Endoscopy

I’m due to have endoscopy on the 10th of September.

Does anyone know how long does it take? Any side effects?

I’m going on holiday 2 days later and I wonder if it’s going to leave any side effects while I’m away?

Is it difficult?

Appreciate some feedback

Just had mine done and some Botox. Went very well, no side effects other then a sore throat for a day after . Good luck and not to worry, a piece of cake compared to what you have already been through.

Generally 1 hr or less, I was a gurney waiting to go when an er came up and kept me waiting for 3 hrs. Oh well , learn to adapt and make the best of it .

It’s not a lengthy procedure and you’ll be a bit groggy for an hour or so from the sedation. I suspect your doctor will say you’ll need at least 24 hours to recover before doing anything. Good luck. I hope it goes well. Tanktank

Don’t worry it only takes about 40 minutes or so , but you will have to sleep it off that usually takes the time up , then a good rest at home good luck

Only side effects I have ever had is a little bit of a sore throat for about 24 hrs.

The procedure doesn't take long at all...maybe a hour. By 2 days after the procedure you probably won't even know you had it done.

Best of Luck!

I had endoscope check ups every 2 years for about 14 years due to Barratts and finally diagnosed with cancer. Endoscopes are done by either of 2 methods, throat spray to numb the back of the throat or partial sedation. With spray they usually ask you to wait in the waiting room for about 20 minutes afterwards to ensure everything is ok. After which you are free to go.

The sedation means you need somebody with to be with you after the procedure.

I used to opt for throat spray as it meant I could go by myself and drive home, with very little after affects.

I will admit its not pleasant but all the staff who treated me put me at ease and were always there to hold my had and give reassurance.

All the best and enjoy your holiday.

A friend was a nurse in the Endoscopy unit and advised sedation, I took her advice and had no side effects whatsoever, my advice would be to ask for sedation.

Good luck.

I think it may depend which hospital you are at whether they will give sedation.

They wouldn't give it me for the one which found the cancer butI did have it for a second one where they measure the tumour by ultra sound

I’m going to have it at Brighton Royal hospital in the UK.

Hope you’re ok?

Don't know about there, I had mine at Robert Peel hospital in Tamworth.

Hope it goes OK

No problem, only last 15-20minutes for the procedure. I have had so many that I lost count. First one was in 96....🤔..2 that year 98 had I think 3 on going stomach problems. 2000 I had one and have had regular schedule of every 1-2 yrs, then switched to every 3yrs now. I have been awake for some and now here in the US they now knock you out. I have never had any side effects nor complications.

The doctor may take biopsies and that could lead to a little bleeding but I never had and problems with that. Colonoscopy on the other hand leaves you a little gassy. I don’t recall any burping but you could be left a little burping because they do inflate the stomach with air so the doctor can see better doing the procedure. The day of the procedure they don’t want you driving because of the anesthesia. Like I said I have had too many to count and I never had a problem. You should be good to go on your holiday. 😊💕

I was in my late 80's when I had it done. A prick in the hand to sedate me, closed my eyes and wondered how long I would have to wait until it took effect when a nurse came and said we will take you to another ward while you wait for a few minutes before you go home - it was all over! I cannot remember having any after effects. Botox was suggested but I thought symptoms not bad enough to have that done. Three years later symptoms no worse so, in my case, one can live with achalasia fairly comfortably. All the best.
