sore inflamed throat - ppi rebound reflux/acid?

Hi so ive been suffering from lpr symptoms (just trouble swallowing really) for 2 months so i was put on PPI's. I originally took 1 20mg a day but went up to 2 and stayed on 2x20mg a day for about 3 weeks. However after 2 weeks of the double dose, i started feeling extremely nauseous and was burping a LOT... i think my food wasnt digesting properly so i just felt nasty and i was burping literally non stop, so I decided about a week ago to drop down to 1x20mg from the 2x20mg. I was still nauseous and burping a lot during this time (i guess the 40mg was still having a bad effect on me) and then 3 days ago I woke up and my throat was the MOST SORE and inflamed its ever been. only been on 1 pill a day for like 4 days at that point. Now, it feels tighter than ever, its visibly red, inflamed and like its not just the tonsils that are sore and red, its the actual throat and i feel sore up until where the thyroid is i guess. its hard to swallow food too.

Is it possible that this is rebound reflux from lowering my dose? or... i was burping a lot because of the nausea due to taking 40mg so would it maybe have been an acid reflux event that occurred because of the constant burping, which actually burnt my throat? i have a feeling its a combo of both.

what do i do now? i cant go back up to 2x20mg because it made me so nauseous (im still a little nauseous on 1 but not as bad as before) and i really just wanted to get off them and try heal my gut...... but now look whats happened....

Any advice on anything i can take to help soothe it? i dont burp as much as i did on the double dose but i still burp very soon after eating my food whilst taking 1. makes me think that i have low stomach acid which is why i want to get off..

Hi firstly you need to go back to your gp and change PPI’S. The red throat is probably from acid reflux. If your food is not digesting then he can give you something to help this. Also your need a endoscopy and barium swallow to see what is going on don’t leave it.

Best wishes

Debbie

hi debbie i’ve already had endoscopy and barium swallow and it looked perfect. this was before the swelling started a few days ago. i don’t need another because yes they’ll just see inflammation in my throat and that’s it because i don’t have actual physical reflux... or heartburn... i have a feeling the ppi brought this on because it is making me burp more because it’s making me nauseous and the vapours then burnt my throat. i am slowly tapering off ppi’s because they’re just making me so much worse and even the GI said that like there’s no damage whatsoever so i only kept going with them because i thought LPR needed longer treatment but i’ve just gotten worse.. he said i can slowly stop them if they’re making me sick because they’re not helping my symptoms anyway.

If you woke up with an inflamed throat, then the likelihood is that it is either acid or bile reflux. If it's bile, then PPI's will not help (but there's plenty of advice on this site). If it's acid, then it's advisable to keep taking PPI's, though you may need to ask your GP to prescribe a different one.

You should take ppi’s about half an hour before breakfast. This is not widely known by doctors. If you need 2 then take the other one before evening meal. Have you tried DGL or slippery elm to sooth acid reflux and sore throat. Keep off all acidic foods. Tomatoes, chocolate (cocoa), fruit juices, red wine, raw onions are the main things.
