Need advice to wean off high dose of PPI

Hello everyone,,

I have been on 80mg Pantoprazole for well over a year and lower doses of PPIs for five years before that. Within the last month, I have now developed atrial fibrillation and have muscle jerking which whilst not being told by medics is direct result of such a high dose, its obviously not helping. Now having blood tests for magnesium etc.

I would really like to hear from anyone who has been on such a high doses of PPI for a long time and what have been the side effects, if any.

Also advice on best ways to reduce doseage without major 'rebound'.

Kindest regards.

Ps. Many thanks to those who have replied to my similar request. very much appreciated.

Your Pantoprazole PPI is not a massive dose as 80 mg of this PPI is equivalent 40mg of Omemprazole or 60 mg of Lansoprazole or 40 mg of esomemprazole. Many of us have to take this dose e.g. 20 mg of Omemprazole in the morning and 20mg at night. You could try reducing your Pantoprazole to 40 mg per day and see how you go on.

I personally have tried to come off them but it's not worth it . It's about quality of life and for me Im much better on them

But we are all different so all the best

Thanks for that Phil. But may I ask where you got those conversion rates from please?

I have tried to reduce down to 40 on two occasions and the result has been a lot more acid reflux plus pain and sleepless nughts.

But would really like to know where you got yiur conversaion rates from as it would help me a lot.

Kind regards

No problem the conversion is on NICE Guidance on PPIs .This gives you the std on low doses conversion table. Hope this helps.

Please check with your doctor. I am nine years post op and about 5 years ago tried to cut down my PPIs i was worried about the long term side effects. I halved my dose. But 4 years ago I was diagnosed with Barrett’s probably as a result of cutting them down.

I didn’t feel lots of reflux. My doctor said it is easier to combat the side effects of PPIs than Barrett’s.

As Heathwaite said we are all different and this is just my experience.

Good luck
