H. Pylori Retest

Since March 2018, when diagnosed with H. Pylori, I've had two upper gastroscopy. In both cases, I've been on a PPI. Two different consultants have said I don't need to stop the PPI as Biopsy is taken direct from the stomach.

I've followed the Triple line therapy treatment priory to the gastroscopy for two weeks.

The result has come clear. I even provided a stool sample and it has come back negative.

My question is can you stay on the PPI whilst checking for h.pylori whether by providing a stool sample or having an upper gastroscopy.

I was tested for H. Pylori a few months ago I was on my regular PPI medication and my stool specimen was negative. My GP contacted me and said she had made a mistake and my PPI should be stopped for two weeks prior, so I was prescribed Rantidine instead this time I was positive and had the triple therapy. I have just been retested again stopping PPI and taking Rantidine this time my stool was negative. So in my experience it is important to stop PPI medication as it can mask true results.

Thanks. I am so dependent on it and also take Ranitidine. I thought I have to stop Rantidine as well. If not, then it's a relief as I take 300mg at once at night.

I didn't feel great when I was on Rantidine only but It was only for two weeks and worth it to get an accurate result. I was relieved to get back on my PPI medication! All the best

Thanks. Have you changed your diet? Do you have reflux as well?

I was diagnosed with Barretts Oesphagus two and half years ago it was a very scary time, I lost four and half stone in weight, changed my diet to smaller portions,I tend to eat chicken, fish and lots of vegetables, good carbs and fruit. I recommend reading 'Down with Acid' on the Barrett's Wessex website it has excellent information including reflux, diet, medication well worth a read.
