Why Am I Throwing Up After Eating Food?

Hello all!

For the past month or so I have basically been throwing up 1 to 2 thirds of food and all liquid that I eat from 5 to 15 minutes after swallowing, and I have no idea why. I have been diagnosed with GERD, however, I can tell that this is something different. When I throw up it isn't acidic whatsoever, which it usually is. Alongside this, I often find myself having horrible headaches, with pain behind my eyes, although I suspect that may be due to dehydration, and abdominal pain, on the lower left hand side of my body, so slightly below the ribs.

I have done numerous tests now. First was an endoscopy, they found nothing but a very minor case of gastritis. They also took a biopsy to test for coeliac disease, which was negative. The doctors took an eosinophil counts, and it came up as being 11, while those with eosinophilic disorders would have a count of around 15. I have taken an esophageal manometry to test for achalasia, again all normal. Doctor suggested it may be cyclical vomiting syndrome but we decided that my symptoms although similar on paper just don't add up.

I have been on a number of medicines, none of which seemed to work. Just finished my last dose of domperidone, and will now go off it to see whether it made a difference. I took various anti-nausea pills, but they just came up when I took them. I was also on steroids for around 2 weeks, as the doctor originally diagnosed me with a BORDERLINE case of eosinophilic gastroenteritis, but he has now said that wasn't necessary.

I recently went to see the neurologist, as the gastro department simply can't figure out what's wrong. They have recommended an MRI scan of the brain, however I very much doubt it has anything to do with that sort of thing. If the MRI scan doesn't show anything, they have also suggested seeing a psychiatrist, as it seems they have decided it's all psychological, but I simply don't think that it is.

Any suggestions, ideas, tests I might want to take would me very much appreciated as, this has been a horrible ordeal thus far, and would like it so end as soon as possible.

Hi depressoespresso,

headaches, pain behind the eyes, vomiting, these are symptoms of migraine. (I've suffered from it for the past 10 years.) Of course, MRI of the brain makes sense, but I nothing is found, I'd try a triptan (naratriptan, sumatriptan etc.). They do not help with headaches of different origin, but are very effective in the case of migraine.

Just an idea. Best wishes, Monika

Thank you very much for the reply. I have suspected migraines as a contributing factor, but am not sure if they're partly at fault for causing the throwing up, or if they're being caused by something else entirely.

I'll speak to my doctor about trying out one of those meds and see if that helps at all.

Once again, thank you for replying.

Kind regards, Julian
