Nissen Fundoplication

Has anyone here had this procedure?

I am currently on the waiting list, I am looking for a little more information on this? Does it make you loose a lot of weight because of not being able to eat much?

Hi Sophia I was about 35 when I had my fundoplication I am now 60. It had no effect on my weight at the time at all and did have a dramatic effect on my reflux reducing it dramatically we are all different but I doubt it will cause weight loss given that the procedure doesn't really reduce the size of your stomach just allows a part of it to 'hook over' the non working valve to keep the contents in the stomach to better effect.

did you nissen surgery last that long, without the return of reflux?

Hi the reflux was drastically reduced for several years and then started to re emerge I was then diagnosed with Barrett's and was closely monitored for about 15 years until I was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer and had the Ivor Lewis operation in 2009. That operation caused me to lose around 2.5 to 3 stone but now my weight is steady at around 12.2 I am 6 ft and was around the 15 stone mark for the majority of my adult life but it was muscle as I was in the armed forces from 17 to age 39.

Glad that u are better, are u still on medication for reflux?

Nope, no medication at all, as my oesophagus is now made from part of my stomach. If I slip down the bed I can get acid in my throat but that rarely happens thankfully as when it does it is very unpleasant 😫

To my knowledge the Nissan op is to correct a hiatus hernia and stop acid reflux. My nissan op sep17 has had no affect on my eating .. it stopped my reflux tho. Good luck. G

I had the procedure in mid-November. I lost about half a stone on the liquid diet but quickly realised most meals could be liquidised (I'm Coeliac and don't actually eat much gf bread). I've put the weight back on and feel significantly better than I did before the op!

It will be two years on 2/22/19. I have had nothing but trouble with mine...no matter what I eat, I get sick,swell up like I'm 9 months pregnant. I still am on prilosec and zantac, tums and liquid anticid.. Dr that did my surgery left and went to another hospital and the new ones are not helping. I would say in the last two years I have felt human maybe 30 days. They didn't tell me I would not be able to throw up or burp after this surgery... do your homework before you have this surgery..mine was not a quick fix. I have talked to many others that have had this surgery, somee it has helped others it did not.

I had the Nissen op just 6 weeks ago. I have lost 1\2 stone, others I understand far more. It is very early stages for me but I also suggest that you investigate alternative procedures such as Stretta (which I had privately) and Links, theses procedures are not well known within the NHS. Unfortunately Stretta didn't work for me, but I am aware that for many patients it has. The main positive it it far less invasive.

I am new to this site and hopefully I can communicate with others who have had the Nissen op to discuss recovery times and final outcome. At the moment I am still experiencing silent acid reflux. It would be very helpful to share our experiences.
