Could my symptoms be side effects of Lansoprazole

For the last 3 years my stools have been light in colour and very soft, sometimes mild diarrhoea, to get technical types 5 & 6 on the Bristol stool chart. However in addition every few weeks whilst passing stools it feels like I am pooing acid, mostly an uncomfortable sensation but occasionally that painful that I dread going to the toilet. At it's worst this is accompanied by a rash and small blisters around the anus.

I have had colonoscopies and a CT scan which have not highlighted any areas of concern.

A chance remark by my wife has made me wonder if these could be a side effects of taking Lansoprazole, although if this is the case 2 GP's and 2 consultants will have failed to make the link. I have been taking Lansoprazole, 30mg for once per day for about 4 years, due to silent acid reflux, identified due to a persistent cough, I have an hiatus hernia.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Dear wilky,

Ling term PPI use has some collateral damage and getting piles/fissures may be one of those. I personally experienced the same, not that GP would agree in first instance nor would anybody has substantiated the side effects.

I have stopped those PPIs and happy.

Do you take Creon? It makes a difference to me.

Hi Wilky just seen your post. Sorry for late reply. Did they take biopsies during colonoscopy to test for microscopic colitis? I did ok on lans for 2 months then got colitis every day for 3 weeks and it cleared up immediately when I stopped. Only way to know for sure is to change it. Maybe try ranitidine and gaviscon advance at night for 2 weeks? Then you will have your answer.

Hi I take lanzoprzole And have diarrhoea almost every morning. Sometimes quite acid. I always wash my bum after pooing and this keeps it from being sore. I know exactly what you mean by sometimes having very acid diarrhoea too. I’m certain it’s the side effects of the lazoprazole. I’ve tried other ppis and why all seem to affect me in a similar way. I did try giving up ppis but there was just too much acid so I had to go back on them. I hope that in the future I will be able to reduce them down and eventually give them up.
