Are you on medication? I would ask to be referred back to the hospital if he is not helping you. I presume you have had an endoscopy to diagnose you? My doctor did not refer me to the hospital for two years until I insisted and then I was diagnosed with a hiatus hernia and Barrett's Oesophagus xx

Hello yes I have been on medication long term. All he has done is doubled my dose. I have had a endoscopy a couple of years ago. All they keep saying is 'controlled with medication'. That's crap because I have symptoms all the time. I'm so fed up of it, but he won't refer me just keeps saying that the op is shit.

After being on Lanzoprazole for almost a year which helped but not ideal as these drugs have side effects and long term damage which I seriously researched - I opted and pushed for surgery. Agreed I had to endure 2 endoscopes , a barium meal and a monitor which meant a day with a tube down my nose and throats but hey don't look back . Surgery I was out the same day . About 3 weeks on liquid diet then slowly introducing solids with restrictions. 5 months on I am a new me both physically and mentally. Fitter and 14kg lighter . Show your GP my post . I will answer any questions.I am 58 and work full time too in a job on my feet - 10 hour shifts.

I was lucky and was referred for a minimally invasion operation. Just 5 little incisions! It worked a dream and I am symptom free and off medications. I do have Barretts however. Wish I had had it done sooner. Best of luck. I am in south of England.

Hi if your not happy see another dr or ask to be referred to a gastrologist at hospital. Look at your diet to see what makes things worse. Keeping a food /drink diary may help.

Good Luck

Debbie

I think the answer might be to ask for a referral for an assessment on whether your hiatus hernia can be repaired surgically. There is sometimes a reluctance to undertake these procedures, but sometimes a Linx device can be used. It is a magnetic bracelet placed around the oesophagus to re-create the valve effect of the lower oesophageal sphincter. I know that the surgeon at University College Hospital, Majid Hashemi, is familiar with the system. It would all depend on whether the pain is caused by reflux or not.

Hi AlanM. Thank you for your reply. This hiatus hernia leaves me with no quality of life. I have the most excruciating pain every day. I have a husband and two boys one 19 and one 3 years old. I work long shifts on my feet for 8-10 hours a day. My stomach is swollen up like a balloon. GPs in the uk will avoid to refer you for surgery saying it will not work. I can't go on like this I need it removed to have a chance to eat and drink fluids normally

There must be a reason for the swelling, and it does sound like you need to have that investigated with some urgency.

Follow advice above, GP`s can only so much then it needs hospital consultants / surgery if they then consider its the only way forward, stay on this website for any information.

Stay positive and good luck at the hospital, I am in pain all day now its a ph treatment I am referred for HH and constant reflux even with large doses of PPI to evaluate whether surgery is required. This is a good website with people who have the same problems and its a relief to find your problems are not a figment of your imaginations as doctors sometimes do not explain that they understand and know what to do other than put you on pills.

You are not alone try to stay in good spirits and all the best for the future.
