Lab results

Hi as you all know my mum had the Ivor Lewis operation and we just had the test results back from lab that the cancer got sent off too .... She was originally told she was stage 2 but after the results returned she was stage 3... They took out 18 lypth nodes and 5 was cancerous so I'm guessing that's why she got a staging 3 ... The tissue round the cancer was clear and the chemo was not effective for my mum so no need for further chemo ... Not sure if that's a good thing or not ... There happy they got it all but always a worry .... Any one els had this situation on here .

After my op they told me that they'd got it all and that that meant no more chemo. They took out a few lymph nodes and told me that the pre op radio\chemo had done the business and I had had a "complete pathological response" which was good news. H

That's brilliant ... The chemo didn't really help my mum so no point doing it after the op for her but they said they got it all

I was in exactly the same situation. Initially diagnosed as stage 1. After surgery, the pathology report showed some lymph node involvement, so was reclassified as T3N1. Pre-op chemo had been ineffective in shrinking the tumour, so they tried a different regimen, but I had a bad reaction to it and the treatment was stopped after one cycle. All that was 11 years ago.

According to my oncologist at the time, the majority of surgical patients are found to be T3N1 and it is very common for the staging to be reclassified based on the final pathology report.

This has made me feel so much better do u remember how many nodes that was effected

They removed around 20 lymph nodes and there were traces of cancer cells in two of them close to the site of the tumour. If I may offer some advice, try not to worry or over-analyse things. If the surgical team said that they had "got it all", that's the best that you can hope for.

I had two nodes discovered with cancer, no chemotherapy as drugs were not effective then, no radium just the operation. That was 24yrs ago. Its an unpredictable journey but being able to have the op. is a very positive start so travel with hope. Best wishes to your mum Sally
