Tube from upper GI Surgery

Hello all,

I have night time acid - reflux or when i lay down it stops me sleeping, suffered for a few years now. I had the camera down 2 years ago and there wasn't anything serious. I don't take any Omeprazole or Ranitidine as i have tried them all and they don't do anything for me. I have just been referred to an Upper GI surgeon who said i have to have a small tube fitted from my nose to stomach - I'm scared. But it will show how severe the reflux is - its stops in for 24 hours. Ha anyone else had this done ?any info appreciated

I had this procedure 6 weeks ago. With me a large plastic tube was threaded via my nose down my throat and l was asked to slowly sip water through a straw 10 times . This tube was removed then the same done with a thinner tube which you then keep inside you for 24 hours attached to a monitor. All has to be done whilst awake. A bit uncomfortable but an important test as I was told I could have surgery afterwards which I wanted for hiatus hernia.

Don't be scared. I felt the same but although it's a bit uncomfortable it wasn't as awful as I has expected. It will give the doctor detailed information which will show what is happening with regard to your acid reflux. Ask the doctor to explain the procedure to you. Go for it! Good luck.

Did you ever try Gaviscon Advance at night before bed, and after main meal?

I find that Zoton Fastab orodispersible Lansoprazole work for me (30mg).

Sounds like you have "silent reflux" ?? (Laryngopharyngeal Reflux ) . Have you had any diagnosis so far ? I have a small sliding Hiatus hernia & LR.

Have you ever had a Barium Swallow?

I think it is a 24 hour pH monitoring process. Not comfortable but it is important for diagnosing what is happening. So it is something not to be scared of as such, if you can manage it, but people do deal with the discomfort with a variety of reactions.

Check with your doctor, he would probably suggest 40mg in the evening before meals.Keep your head at 30 degree (approx) when you sleep. Get better soon.

I would check how advanced your condition is . To my horror I requested non invasive surgery. Only then I found out my condition of hiatus hernia was too advanced for this . I go in hospital this week for surgery as I feel I can't take medication for life with no actual healing progress.
