Hi. I had a total gastrectomy before 2010. I'm still getting dumping syndrome even now 2017. When will that end and how can I lose weight

It is now seven years since your surgery and I think it is unlikely that things will change very much now in relation to how you have to eat, and so on.

I think I would look carefully at your diet and what things, if any, you can eat without problems. You might consider moving on to a diet as if you were diabetic, but you may well have done that by now anyway.

I think I would also ask your doctor about whether you might possibly have developed insulin resistance, where it is more difficult to maintain the right balance of insulin in your system. I think you do need to have a talk with the doctor about this; sometimes it is difficult to separate in our minds what we are experiencing from the after-effects of the surgery, and it may be that there is a new development (eg diabetes) that is not related to the gastrectomy?

I am sorry that your simple question may not have a simple answer!

Strange how everyone is so different, my total gastrectomy was June 2012 and lost over 4.5 stone between hospital and home and been around 10 stone for some time now irrespective of what I eat although get unwell if overeat. Still suffer with regurgitation and generally swallowing food or drink can be painful but only ever had an occasional issue with dumping syndrome. Still get bile reflux but accepted that all these things are part of who I am now and whilst will never be normal as such have lots of energy and enjoying life as best I can. None of which helps you lose weight, can only reconfirm what Alan saying must go through things with your doctor. Rob

Crumbs,

I'm only two years post Ivor Lewis two part oesophagectomy, and I lost three and a half stone.

I am eating more now than I ever have in my life and I can't rise above seven stone in weight. Food dumping has been a constant problem but it's all so hit and miss.

Have you tried adding Chia to your food? Chia swells in the insides and makes you feel more full, consequently you eat less. Well that's the theory give it a try. Available in Sainsburys, but make sure you buy the 99p one, the price of it varies massively and the organic one is about six pounds for the same amount.

Good Luck with it and best wishes

Richard
