How do I know if I am healing?

Hi all, I am 3 weeks in to being diagnosed with severe erosive oesophagitus. I'm on 40mg of omeprazole and ranitidine before bed. I have made all the necessary changes to diet abs lifestyle etc have lost weight. We are on holiday at the moment. A special holiday to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary and I have sat here all week drinking only water and eating mostly cucumber. Although I had some ice cream as a treat yesterday and a couple of sips of hubbies beer. My throat symptoms have pretty much gone which is all I had before so I'm just wondering if I am healing. I have no idea. I had no idea this was going on before really. I'd had indigestion and was put on a low dose of omeprazole which sorted it then had a camera which found the ulceration. Is this it for the rest of my life? I don't want to be on these tablets long term although my consultant said that I probably will be. I can already feel that my thyroxine isn't working as well. I suppose what I am asking is if there is anyone out there who has got past this and living a "normal" life again without medication? Thanks for your thoughts xxx

Hello

I take 80 mg of omeprazole a day, and I can cope with only pain if I eat a lot. small meals are best and try to stay upright after food & do not eat late in the evening(19.00hrs latest) sometimes even water gets stuck and will not go down but a few burps/swallowing gets it down. Good luck & do not let it get you depressed, there is lots of support though this website. Thyroid problems are linked with this problem re; % are greater to get this problem but not always. Keep smiling it could be worse.

Kind regards & thoughts David

I am not a doctor, but I would think it should be possible for you to lead a normal life WITH medication. Many of us on this site have been on PPI medication for many years and lead normal lives. Provided the omeprazole and ranitidine are controlling your stomach acid, the oesophagitis should gradually ease.
