Bloating and dumping.

Morning my hubby was diagnosed 25 months ago and had surgery 21 months ago. All has been going really well his weight is stable and he is doing great. A few days ago he had a dumping episode which was totally out of the blue as he hadn't eaten anything different since then he has had a bloated feeling and feels full after eating. He had a smaller dumping episode again last night and had a pain in his back. He had 2 paracetamol and this stopped the stomach pains and back pain. I just wondered if this is normal, just panicking. Thanks for your help in advance. Helen xx

I'm 5yrs post op' and I still get random bouts of dumping without any obvious cause. It 'almost' always happens in the morning so I try to make any appointments that I have for 11am and after, and I have breakfast at least an hour earlier than usual. When I can't choose the time, I get up and have breakfast a couple of hours earlier, usually things work out ok. I very seldom experience any pain with dumping and when I have, it's only been on a'one off basis', so not on a short term but regular basis, and it's never been severe pain. The bloated and 'too full' feeling, quite often followed by tiredness is an ongoing thing for me. I can eat most things without any problems but knowing how much is too much is another matter. Just one small mouthful can make all the difference, it's as if my stomach doesn't know how full it is until it's too full. As it's too late to do anything about it by then I try to leave the table wanting more, it's a bit disheartening if you're really enjoying a meal but it's better than the discomfort that extra mouthful or two cancause. Sometimes think my eyes really are bigger than my belly, now.

As Magpuss says I have similar issues where the bouts of dumping appear for absolutely no reason I can fathom, most days I am fine others just 2 slices of toast are enough to make me feel terrible. I similarly don't get the bloating but have learnt after 7 1/2 years that if I know I need to be ok (say a wedding or something similar) - I simply don't bother eating for a while beforehand :) if I am busy I forget to eat anyway given there are no 'hunger pains' to remind me.

I also get some back and side pain particularly around the scars but with an aversion to taking any tablets always (much to my wife's annoyance) I tend to wait too long to take suitable pain relief. I am sure one day I will learn but my wife is always asking ...................when ...............................??

Hi I was diagnosed in May 2015 and had surgery in October same year, I still experience dumping and I don't think there is a definitive answer. Small and often is still the rule and reducing sugary things at mealtimes works for me. Members of my support group say this is normal and some of them are 10 years on, so try not to worry too much I think it is normal but check with your consultant when you next have a review and maybe get them to refer him to dietetics. Good luck.
