I'm a new and just happened to find this site today. I am a 74 year old lady with a Hiatus Hernia which is very troublesome when laying down at night - I currently sleep more or less sitting up. I have been taking Omeprazole (20 mg) for just over a year. In Tuesday's Daily Mail there was a small article about long term use of Proton Pump Inhibitors and suggested links to Kidney Disease, dementia and osteoporosis. It also suggested the risk of dying in the next 6 years as being between 31 and 51 percent. It was an American study based on the records of 6 million patients. Should I be worried? I will discuss this with my Doctor but was wondering if anyone has had problems.

I was on Lanzoprazole for a number of years before having any problems. I eventually started having joint and bone pain, plus debilitating tiredness but I'd started taking them when I was in my mid forties and stayed on them til I was in my early seventies. Since my op' I've used Gaviscon 'when necessary' which fortunately isn't often. There's been no lasting joint or bone problems, just the 'normal' occasional aches and tiredness that comes with age, (my 78th is on the horizon).
