I have a para oesophageal hernia.

Hi everyone, my name is Christine and I have a paraoesephagal hernia. This means my stomach and pancreas have gone into my chest. I am not well enough to have the operation to put things back in place and stitch up my diaphragm up.

This causes me to get food stuck in my oesophegus. I can only eat very small meals and I often have food go down the wrong way, which is quite distressing trying to cough it up.

If I eat too much I then want to vomit or I have a lot of saliva in my mouth that I need to get rid of. The problem is you don't know when you've eaten too much as everything is fine until the last mouthful and then the trouble starts. It is very unpleasant especially if you are out socialising.

Hi Joe, That sounds a miserable problem. I don't have the same problem, I've had an oesophagectomy for cancer, but I do know what you mean by saying you don't know when you've eaten too much until you've eaten too much! It's so difficult to judge. And as for socialising, at least we get to know who our real friends are!

Without knowing the full details of your situation, I would say that this can be a serious problem and I hope that you will soon be fit and well enough to have it fixed. I also hope that you have seen an experienced consultant. I think that from the medical point of view there would need to be some form of strategy to be able to put this right, and perhaps some plan to improve your fitness and strength before surgery. If not, I think you need to find out more information about what the future treatment would be, as I do not think that this is something that can be ignored. Meanwhile ask your doctor to prescribe liquid nutritional drinks to try and maintain your nutrition levels as far as possible.

Hi Christine,

I have had similar problems. After all the treatment failed I started researching and experimenting with myself. After 10 years of effort today I am free from all problem. I am not dependent on medication anymore. Like I suggested to Ian in my earlier reply I would recommend that you increase the intake of fruits and salads in your diet. This will prevent the issue of eating too much. Also, have only salads for dinner. It will ease out your hernia.
