steroids

Hi there,

I am 2 years post oesophagectomy, and I am now on steroids dexamethasone, but I am having terrible rashes on my legs and arms that keep on bleeding. I am on a 2mg daily dose, but the doctor has advised to go to a 1mg daily dose. Has anyone else had a problem with steroids?

I became allergic to them - have not taken any medication in relation to our surgery except the occasional Gavascon for years. I had my total oesopghagectomy in February 2007.

Hi there, I think I will make an appointment with the doc, he said to come back in 2 weeks anyway. Thanks for your reply

Hmmm. I only took steroids for three days per round of pre-surgical chemo and can safely say it was up there as perhaps one of the most horrid aspects of the process; not so much the hoovering of lawns, ironing of curtains and jam, soup or chutney-production at 4.00am but the 'roid rage on day five of each cycle and the subsequent comedown was hard to bear, for both myself and my poor wife. Itchy, bleeding legs, no: only Lansoprazole did that. A change to Omeprazole (15mg, every other day) resolved it...

Hi Honorius, Yes I take 30mg of Lanzoprazole, I started of with Omeprazole, but the doc changed it to lansoprazole, and yes I can sympathise with the insomnia, I was awake at 2.30 this morning, sometimes its 3am or 4am, doing housework, but thank you for advice I appreciate it

Hi Tgrac001, Yes I had a blood test last week, but the doc did not say what it was to be checked for. I shall get the results tomorrow.

Thanks for your reply

I'm with Honorious on this - though could not have described it so eloquently !

Missy - why have you been prescribed steriods ? The only "help" I can offer is that my s-i-l who has utericaria ( cause unknown ) is prescribed 4 x normal dose of anti histamines .

You do have my sympathy ,itchyness is HORRIBLE .

And as others said - have a blood test .I know that B12 deficiency can cause severe itchy rashes and is quite common .

Hi violet queen

The palliative care nurse thought I would benefit from them, but I'm not so sure now. The doc said if the rash and bleeding was no better he would lower the dose, but you may just as well call me hammy the hamster, as the have made my cheeks quite puffy, and have more facial hair than my husband. I had a blood test last week, so I will get the results tomorrow.

Thank you for your reply
