Did you have sedation last Time? If not I would recommend you do. I was blissfully unaware of what was happening when I had mine.

Hi Sms,No I didn't have sedation, I cannot stand anything in my throat it makes me feel really ill,I had to go in hospital in 2012 where they had to put a tube up my nose and down my throat into my stomach, I pre warned the cons and a lady dr I had a problem with this, they said we have done many times,so off they went and carried on,unfortunately the both got covered in vomit and the lady dr was not very pleased with me,is it possible to have GA for this procedure ?

It is fairly standard to be offered sedation for an endoscopy examination, and, personally, I would recommend this. There is no real alternative to the camera down your throat, except a nasal version through your nose, but the throat version tends, I believe, to give a better picture of what is happening. They really need to do this to check on whether there are any physical blockages, and can also take biopsies to check for dysplasia, cancer or any other physical problem.

A barium swallow test means swallowing white liquid whilst they track it through an x-ray machine, and this can show the swallowing process. A manometry test will show the pressure at various points during the swallowing process.

I think that the hospital staff are well used to reassuring nervous patients, but clearly did not take your own concerns seriously enough. They are normally quite adept at solving these problems though and I am sure that they will find a way round it to ensure that the discomfort is kept to a minimum. You can always ask to see the consultant prior to the test if you are not happy with their plans.

Hi Alan. Thanks for your reply, it's not the discomfort that concerns me, it's the retching that gives me the problem, I cannot stop heaving once it goes to down my throat,I had a major operation n 2003 for a colon rupture, I had a few problems after the op where there was a build up of bile in my stomach, the Drs had to put tube up my nose and down my throat to drain the bile off,I had to keep itin place for 48 hours once it was in place I was ok,but the Drs got wet every time they put one down my throat

2 years post op,..all is well except for scar tissue building up in the join, so every 4-6 weeks i have a stretch, this involves a tube with in inflatable bulb down whats left of my oesophagus, which is then inflated in order to stretches the tissue. i have lost count of the number of times i have had this procedure, probably a dozen or more. NEVER had a problem, the reason..? i asked for sedation..works every time, i drift off, then they wake up when it is all done..going for another tomorrow,..not in the least bit bothered. so you know what to insist on..Good luck, and best wishes...Mike
