Hope you can help me. My husband was diagnosed with reflux 2years ago. He has had camera down throat, and a 24hr monitor that involved tubes up this nose. He also suffers with nasal polyp's, gout, copd (worked with chemicals), psoriasis, anal fistula ( not yet arrupted after 10yrs) and is self medicating for prostate problem (pumpkin seed oil). He suffers with all these problems and rarely visits Dr, I think he thinks they will all go away on there own. He never has check ups just plods along sending me to chemist. Are you bored yet.. I am!. If he knew I was posting this he would be so angry. Oh yes he has anger issues too. After a bout of what we thought was chesty season type cough recently, which he sent me for strong antibiotics, which was once prescribed when he thought he was really I'll a few years ago. As we live in Spain these are quite easy to obtain over the counter. Although they didn't get rid of cough they seemed to ease it, until he started coughing up mucus after food. He gags and brings up clear mucus. It can last for ages before it settles down, but if he eats it starts again. The food connection makes me think reflux. After a period of obstaining from alcohol, he is now back on and has been since last summer. He doesn't drink everyday but 'binges'. Any ideas apart from me mentioning the D(r's).? Thanks for reading all of this .

Oh dear, it sounds as if your husband is his own worst enemy. With so many problems he really ought to be seeking help for himself and not placing the burden on you.

I've no idea if this will be of any help to him - (and thereby you), but after a long standing problem with mucus I've found that taking Apple Cider Vinegar, has helped. At least, 'I think it has'.

My problem with mucus began three years ago, (after my oesophagectomy) and has persisted 'on and off' since then, but since I started taking ACV it's been so much better. Because it has been an 'on and off ' problem I can't say with any certainty that its solely down to ACV, all I can say is that now, when I do get mucus, there's less of it and it doesn't keep coming back after every meal. But that's not the best bit - the best bit is, I can go for days and even a few weeks now without having any mucus problems at all. It's so nice to be able to enjoy my food without dreading the onset of coughing and retching afterwards.

I should tell you that the ACV that I have (Higher Nature) isn't the clear looking type that's been pasteurised, pasteurisation kills off what is rather fancifully called 'the mother'. This is what is said to give it its potency. I have 10 ml in juice - or water, (but not in hot water) every day.

No idea if this will be of any use to you at all, but it's got to be worth a try, and he really should see a doctor whether this works or not. Fingers crossed for both of you, good luck!

My husband had the same symptoms after eating, he brought up a lot of mucus. He had suffered acid refulx for years and kept taking Rennies. Had lost a lot of weight and could not eat solids. I persuaded him to see a doctor and that was in 2012, he was diagnosed with OC and had the full chemo treatment and operation. He has aslo COPD which again pduces mucus nut is being treated for this. I suggest you get your husband to see a docotor and not rely on self medicating. Good luck

Thank you to all who replied. The burdon on me is terrible. If he would take some responsibility for his own health maybe I could see some light at the end of this very long and dark tunnel we are in. He has always waited for all his 'symptoms' to ease or disappear. I fear everytime he has a 'problem' it will turn nasty. But he is a grown man for crying out loud, I can't shackle him and drag him to doctors. Its a case of the boy who called wolf. When he had the tube up his nose to his digestive system for 24hrs, they told him it wasn't bad enough to operate. That was 18mth ago. He knows he should avoid stress and alcohol and blames the stress which he says is all down to me. I am a nervous wreck as he watches me all the time. He went out drinking 2days ago as the coughing eased. It has started up again and that a my fault.

It probably is not much help from a medical point of view - it is only a doctor who can work through the various problems, but it probably helped to write it all down! There probably is some medication that would help with the mucus (some people find domperidone helps, but you need to follow the instructions carefully and it needs a doctor to make a proper diagnosis).

There are probably underlying fears that both of you have, but unexpressed fears cannot get resolved by themselves can they!

Is he on a PPI? The fact that he has clear mucus is encouraging! An acid reflux medicine should help a lot. They are called a Proton Pump inhibitor! Because I was so proud of not having to take many pills I ignored the fact that I had heartburn and it was not due to drinking I developed it 22 years ago when I was pregnant with my daughter and I am so quite certain now that it is somewhat a genetic Northern European thing. The more I have learned about Barret's esophagus, my heritage and the fact that my cancer was Andecarcinoma and I am a natural redhead the double chromosome 16. It will be interesting to find out the statistic of this cancer as I have a redheaded Irish friend that was a swim coach never smoked or drank much but too developed heartburn when pregnant so bad that she had to have an inhaler! Maybe your husband need an inhaler? I just recently started to use it on a consist basis. I am hoping this may help you? That is what this website is all about! I have learned so much from it and try to apply what I have learned and communicate with my doctors what I need. So grateful that I found this site!

I will sound like a bit of a spoilsport and say that if your husband has been told he has a reflux problem, then he shouldn't drink all. Drink is one of the first things to stop, and then fatty food and spicey food.

I had major surgery to try and stop the problem, but I'd left it too late.

Reflux that is ignored can turn into problems such as Barretts Oesophagus, which is a pre-cancerous condition, which can in turn become the big C if ignored.

It is not something to ignore. Get it looked at and read up on it.

Try chewing extra winter fresh gum as soon as your done eating or as soon as you start feeling the fit coming , anyone with this issue probably feels it coming on about to start before it gets bad . I know this sounds stupid but try it . Other gums may work this is just the one I use and like .
