Hi Muriel

I had a bone density scan as l was concerned Omeprazole leeches the calcium from the bones. I was told l had osteoporosis too. But after a good chat with my GP she assured me it was no worse than any post menopausal women. I now take a calcium suppliment daily and Alendronic Acid once a week. I think we all have to be aware our vitamin and mineral levels can suffer due to only eating small amounts, l also take a Vit D suppliment and a good multivitamin. You could ask your GP if she could refer u to someone who could help with your dietry needs.

Best wishes

Yes, having a bone density scan would be worthwhile. You will probably not be able to get by without a PPI like omeprazole, but the supplements can stop your iron levels reducing as much as they would do otherwise. It may be that the iron supplements have to be given in a different form from normal because your system may not absorb things so easily.

A routine blood test showed up an under active thyroid, although I had no symptons. Not everything is absorbed in the normal way post op. so it is worth checking other methods of taking supplements.

Best wishes sally

Hi,

I am 8 years out and have normal age related osteoporosis, I do take a multi vitamin as my d level was down, my iron level was fine but the bloods iron storage capability was low.

It is worth asking your GP for an annual blood check in the autumn / early winter as vitamin d levels are naturally low during the late winter - spring period as daylight hours have been short.

Hi all, I have had osteoporosis for years due to taking huge quantities of steroids in my thirties for an auto-immune disease and was thus put on amend ronin acid in my forties along with immune suppressing drugs. I knew that the immune suppressing drugs increased my chance of getting lymphoma and as they reduce immunity I guess they might increase the chance if getting cancer in general although that was not stated.

Since getting OC I have read a lot about ALENDRONIC Acid and suspect that could be related to my OC -stuff like take it whilst upright, don't lie down afterwards...if you get any trouble swallowing stop immediately...the papers don't mention OC though. When I got trouble swallowing whilst I went straight to GP I was a bit complacent and whilst I knew it could be cancer I did think it was just that the ALENDRONIC acid had damaged my oesophagus but not by cancer, otherwise I would have pushed far harder for my initial diagnostic consultation.

Since finishing treatment I continue to take the Vitamin tablets but refuse to go back on ALENDRONIC acid. I would advise that if you do take it have it by infusion, which I think is sux or twelve monthly, rather than orally. I know osteoporosis is nasty, but nothing like cancer.....

Remember percussive exercise also helps your bones, so walking, running, skipping etc

Good luck all, hilary

Hi, I have osteoporosis also I refused to take the Alendronic acid after I read the side effects. I have Prolia injections twice a year and take a prescribed vitamin D tablet once a day.
